A child places his arms in a tray full of milk on June 20 as rats drink their fill at the Karni Mata Hindu temple in the town of Deshnoke in India’s northwestern state of Rajasthan. Rats, hundreds and hundreds of them, inhabit the temple, where they are believed to be the incarnations of human beings from the local Charan tribe whose souls are temporarily inhabiting the bodies of rats until their rebirth.
