Amazing performance and we must admit that he has the weakest team then above all captains. But they are playing like a Team not in grouping. This is his best things that he is fighting them like warriors :hbk:
Hats off for him :hat:

Re: Misbah's record as a captain

Cannot comment until Pakistan plays away matches in Australia and/or South Africa. Winning against (today's) West Indies, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe is not a big deal and Dubai and Abu Dhabi are not really 'away' conditions. Stats are a little unfair to earlier captains.

Re: Misbah's record as a captain

It does include two matches against the number one team in the world and if dubai and abu dhabi are not really "away" conditions than what are they. They are not really "home" conditions either.

Re: Misbah's record as a captain

I guess KakaB meant is that this Batting Line-up should be tested on Seaming, Faster and Bouncier Tracks ..... then we'll know where this Unit stands ..... There's been seldom a worry about our bowling ..... now we only need a good couple of reliable fast bowlers to pair up with Manna' & Ajmal :)

Re: Misbah's record as a captain

I am just saying that other captains did not have many opportunities to play in venues like Abu Dhabi or Dubai. These stats for other captains tell the story of playing in real hostile conditions, in different weather/playing conditions, in different pitches, mostly with 'biased' umpires. Just saying that it is a little unfair to compare Pakistan playing England in Dubai now to Pakistan playing England at the the Oval in 80s or earlier.

Re: Misbah’s record as a captain

So Far Its an amazing record

Misbah ul Haq :jhanda:

Re: Misbah's record as a captain

Spot on Kaka. Let's see how the team does under Misbah in more testing conditions of Australia and South Africa

Conditions in UAE and subcontinent may not be the same but they are definitely similar ... just like conditions (bouncy, seaming pitches) in Aus, Eng, SA and NZ are very similar

Misbah has been a fantastic captain for Pakistan and that too at a difficult time - I am taking nothing way from him but to say that he is better than IK, Miandad, Kardar, Mushtaq or even Wasim Akram purely on the basis of above stats is unfair. Misbah **(and the team) has not been tested in alien conditions yet.

**Under Imran's captaincy Pakistan never lost a test series against the mighty Windies, beat England for the first time in England in 1987, beat India for the first time in India in 1987, won the world cup in 1992. Misbah has not achieved anything of that sort, just yet

Miandad was as shrewd and smart a captain as they come and his record speaks for itself

Let's keep things in perspective. This same team could (and would) easily get thrashed in Australia (anyone who believes otherwise would do well to see our record under much stronger teams in Australia over the past decade or so). **Australia is and has always been the hardest place for Pakistan to win.

**Although Pakistan lost the last two series in England in 2006 and 2010, we have done well in England in the past (won in 1987, 1992 and 1996, drew in 2001), so I am not really that concerned about our performances in England

Winning or atleast doing well in places like Australia and South Africa should be the benchmark for Asian teams ... *For teams like England, Australia and SA, it is winning in Asia. Unless England do well in India and Sri Lanka this year they cannot claim to be the true best team
*

Re: Misbah's record as a captain

If Misbah had the same resources which Imran had he would have had a much better record than Imran's. Imran had Miandad, zaheer, Mudassar, Mohsin, Waqar, Wasim, Abdul Qadir, etc. Compare that with what Misbah has. Before this series began everyone was saying that Misbah has been great against minnows, the real test will come when he plays against England. Well he has smashed England. To say that till he plays in those countries we cannot compare him to Imran is not correct or fair. Imran was great but he had giants around him.

I dont subscribed to the view that this team will get thrashed in Aus. This is like Boycott saying he would bet his house on Englands victory. Cricket is a funny game and Pak might lose or even might win, who knows.

Re: Misbah's record as a captain

**Probably YES but it is arguable

True - **This team does not compare to the teams of the 80s-mid 90s in talent. The 80s team had the strongest batting and the mid-80s-mid 90s team the strongest bowling attack in our history IMO

Re: Misbah's record as a captain

And one could equally argue that the current English, Australian and South African teams are not their country's best either **... and If Imran or Miandad captained Pakistan against most present day sides they would have a record better than or atleast as good as Misbah's

**English team of the 80s - Boycott, Gooch, Gower, Gatting, Lamb, Botham, Bob Willis, Underwood etc. was more talented than the present team

Re: Misbah's record as a captain

Underwood was not part of the 80's team which you have listed and the current English bowling line up is certainly better than the one listed and batting maybe marginally weaker. The 80's Australians and windies were far better but than neither Imran nor Miandad were able to conquer them.

Re: Misbah's record as a captain

Great job by Misbah! I said before too he should get a lot of credit for Pak's recent successes. Who cares if he is old, let him play on as long as he can continue to perform like he has been for Pak.

I think it also helps that there are not too many egoistic seniors in the team.

Re: Misbah’s record as a captain

Broad (bowling ave 31) and Anderson (bowling ave 30) better than Botham (ave 28) & Willis (ave 25)

Re: Misbah’s record as a captain

Pakistan v England: Misbah-ul-Haq on a mission to stabilise hosts with calm, caution and cunning

**Scyld Berry
**In the opening session, in Dubai, his strategy and tactics caught England‘off guard’ by the admission of his opposite number, Andrew Strauss. Misbah’s captaincy, and his own fifty, did not let England off the hook.

At 103 for four in the second Test, England were bouncing back. Their self-belief was growing, after they got their selection right for the pitch, and they found something in it for their seamers as well as their spinners: not a slow nothing, but a slow turner, which should produce a definite result.

But Misbah blocked England’s way. He may have been motionless for much of the time; he may have been expressionless, save when Stuart Broad troubled him with two late bouncers. But he was still the day’s main architect.

With his defence Misbah sealed the cracks in Pakistan’s batting, and papered over them with his first brace of sixes off Monty Panesar, after he had scored only two singles himself. Thereby he pushed men back and raised the siege, allowing his youthful partner to play his own game.

He then added a coat of paint, when England took the second new ball, sensing it could be their day. Misbah seized the moment to accelerate, and handsomely off-drove both James Anderson and Stuart Broad - salting Anderson’s wound after he had dropped Misbah when only 30 off Panesar. In the day’s last over, when he drove Panesar again for consecutive sixes, Misbah added a second coat of paint, leaving it to dry over night. From his last 46 balls he hit 43 runs, keeping his side just ahead, given that England’s batsmen are out of form.

Misbah is not as good a player as Inzamam-ul-Haq, a consummate hooker who would have dealt with Broad’s bouncers. But Misbah has something of Inzamam’s lordly demeanour, and he is a far more impressive captain.

Out of Pakistan’s spot-fixing scandal, Misbah is the best thing to have come – along with the virtues he has inculcated in his inexperienced team. While Salman Butt is serving a 30-month sentence, Misbah is serving his country.

In the process of winning seven and losing one of his 14 Tests so far, with an equally fine one-day record, he has brought a stability that Pakistan has seldom known, perhaps not since the 1950s. Their team selections and batting orders used to change for a pastime, or perhaps for a reason more sinister, but not under Misbah. Only his fourth bowler differs from one Test to the next.

The fact that he admits his age is 37 suggests, in itself, a basic honesty.

So many Pakistanis have appeared at ‘20’, and retired long before they have reached 35. But not Misbah.

His calmness may well stem from his perspective on life and having an alternative career. Born in Mianwali in Punjab, and from the same Niazi clan as the former captain (and perhaps future president) Imran Khan, he studied at college and got an MBA before he played first-class cricket, starting in 1999.

His combination of calm, caution and cunning must have soon become evident because he has been captaining domestic teams since 2001. He won a few national caps the best part of a decade ago, but did nothing of note, and was not picked for Pakistan between 2003 and 2007.

But his characteristics were just what Pakistan needed after the manic captaincy of Shahid Afridi and the criminal one of Salman Butt. Whereas Afridi bit the ball, Misbah bit the bullet and took Pakistan back to basics.

It would be an exaggeration to say that Pakistan’s cricket could have died of shame after the spot-fixing, but it could have wilted and declined, scandalous and homeless. But Misbah has stopped that happening, by averaging 80 as Test captain, and by his leadership. In his calm, cautious and cunning way, Misbah has been the most important cricketer in the world in the last year.

Re: Misbah's record as a captain

Its a pity that this team is not being offered more tours.

Re: Misbah’s record as a captain

There is not much difference between 31, 30 and 28. The overall bowling quality is much better. Underwood might have retired in 1982 but he was nowhere near as effective as he was during his peak in 70’s. Plus as he retire3d in 82 he cannot be the bowler of 80’s. England had spinners who were average but no one of the quality of Swan.

Re: Misbah's record as a captain

It is the same with most teams because of the T20 world cup this year. India's next test series against NZ is in Sep 2012

Zaka might be able to convince lesser teams (don't think the likes of SA, Aus and NZ w'd be too keen on playing in UAE esp. after seeing what's just happened to England) to play Pakistan in UAE
