MIS

I might have posted this here before, but who cares i am gonna post it again :o

How should I go about getting experience? Theres hardly any jobs here let alone internship, moving righ tnow is not an option. Dont know what to do. Its starting to take a toll on me where i am thinking of just doing something else but then i am like no :bummer: Help what should i do?!?!?! Btw i have a BBA degree.

Re: MIS

where are you?
I am assuming canada due t the whole jobs thing,
Is there no help from the university for placement?

Re: MIS

Detroit, most IT jobs here require 2 - 3 years of experience. I know some people who got the job by lying about the experience, as in making it up. Most MIS internships and entry level programs were at companies in or related to the auto industry. I even had an interview call from chrystler but they ended up canceling the position, ford did the same thing. As well as U of M. Hehe maybe its every job i apply for that ends up being canceled.

You know whats funny though, theres been atleast two or three people that todl me to contact you and there you are, the first one to reply

Re: MIS

2 or 3 people, whoa. I can only offer my limited perspective.
detriot hmmm, okay

we can talk more, but realize that you may not have the best luck with larger companies, ford and chrysler etc are way to bureaucratic in terms of their hiring, they have automatons sitting there just doing a comparison of yur resume to their checklist, it works, it is easy and they get enough resumes that it does not adversely impact them, t get a job at those companies you need to tailor your resume to the exact position and even then there is no guarantee.

i/T is generally doing well these days. You need to get your foot in the door. reach out to former class mates, professors and ppl you kow in community, although desi cimmunity is horrible in helping each other out, atleast the older generation.

If you would like I can take a look at your resume and give you some feedback.

we can talk offline if you like, so i can get aunderstanding of what you have done so far and see what else can be done.

Re: MIS

Y dont u go for MBA , its better options if u r in pakistan then might be i can help u , now its kinda difficult for me

Re: MIS

The MBA program that i want to do requires 2 - 3 years of work experience after graduation. But thanks I am in USA.

Fraudia I am gonna PM you

Re: MIS

Phats, do NOT go to an MBA program right away, u will be overqualified and under experienced for jobs. You are right for getting atleast2-3 years of experience before going for your MBA.

Re: MIS

U r welcom

hmmmmm

Re: MIS

Fraudia thats what I thought too. And the reason I wanted to apply to these big companies was because one, they have excellent programs unlike smaller companies who dont exactly like investing in their employees, most companies want people who have experience and can start off right away which is kind of hard for a person who hasnt had a job in the field. And these companies or atleast some of them still pay for tuition if you want to go for higher education and provide training.

I find it very difficult to network because I am not very social to begin with. Unfortunately, when I was in school i had a group of friends and that is all i hung out with, and most of them are either married or in the same situation as me and like i said some just made up experience. I have joined alumni org and I am trying to connet with old classmates, but i find it really hard to go to parties and bar nights, just not something I can do. Whats even worse is that most of the people who are part of these orgs and MIS program are guys which makes it even harder. But I am working on it. I think its true when people say that you should never build a network when you need but rather build it before you do.

decent whats "hmmmmm" for? I think things work very differently in pakistan.

Re: MIS

And my parents circle of friends consists of physical therapists(A WHOLE bunch of them), dentists, doctors, and psychologists and I think like you said desis arent too good with helping each other. And I think my dad feels like he would be asking for a favor if he talks to any of his friends about it, and he doesnt want to.

Re: MIS

Phats

I can see your parents reluctance, the whole who owes who a favour business of desi community is annoying as hell.

Check with your placement office at the university, see wh the major employers for your uni grads are, approach them. as far as networking goes, anyone and everyoe can be a potential source of help, people need to know yo are looking.

As far as large companies go and how muchthey invest in their employees, it varies, and even companies that do not everyone gets their MBA paid for and not everyone gets extensive external training. check out vault.com and commuity section for companies and see what ppl are saying, it also is a good source for company info, although i mustwarn u that the discussion boards there attract the more jilted type of employee rather than a good repreentation across the board.

now as far as networking goes, with guys and at social hours and so, I can see you are uncomfortable and u dont have to go to those. your business school probably has other events going on anyways, try those and while u have thsi time join some volunteer organizations, u will meet ppl thru those, ppl know more ppl and so on and so forth and it just increases your chances.

if you have not joined linkedin.com yet, do so..you will be surprised how many ppl you know who know someone that can help you.

Re: MIS

I am guessing you are on there, how do I add you?

I am actually trying to start volunteering for usa corps which is a consulting volunteering service, it sounds really interesting.

And yes i have checked vault.com and now i am so desprate that its not even a question of what a company has to offer, its about just getting a job.

Re: MIS

I am actually in the process of splitting out my acct there due to some undesired outcomes of mixing professional contacts with online acquaintances, and have blocked anyone from seeing my network, so that will nto do you any good until I have created 2 seperate ids to keep the two world seperate.

But, you should be able to connect to tons of ppl from your university who are in the area and if they are your uni grads u can easily add thm tonetwork and send them requests to connect, u dont have to go thru someone to connect you.

That is where the strength is.

btw I just looked at your resume, I will try to give y more feedback later, b ut here are a few key items.

You ned to put key skills at the top. somoene has to scan all te way to the bottom to see what types of languages and all you have experience with. chronological resume makes sense at times and a functional resume makes sense at other times. u may want to try putting a fucntional resume too, and that can be based on skills from jobs as well as student leadership and volunteer activities. believe me when ppl hire fresh grads they know that ppl dont have a lot of experience but they are looking for skill sets, and abilities so if that can be demomstrated thru internships studet leaderwship etc that can be good.

lastly for your positions, dont just list what you did, think about what did you do that would be of help to the reviewer so instead of 8 bullets which say little focus on 4 that just hit the pont across that you are good with people, deliver results, handle responsibiluty well etc etc.

wetfeet.com will give iu some good ideas on diff versiosn of resumes for new grads, take a look see how tha works out for u.

Re: MIS

Basically you want me to re-do the whole thing :hoonh:

I will look into it the website soon

Re: MIS

I am just suggesting things that you can do. It is your chouce whether you want to spend the time to redo the resume.

For best results ppl tailor their resume for each opportunity, I kow it requires time and effort, but isn't it worth it?

Re: MIS

Hmmm I am gonna try doing that but I am just too lazy for it. My resumes format has been the same since the fisrt time i created it like 3 years ago. So i guess it wouldnt hurt to re-do it. Secondly, do you think the extra classes that i took at comm college, is that even worth mentioning?

I know it sounds horrible but I havent been spending much time researching and things like that. I just go on certain websites (my schools career services, careerbuilder, monster) and thats about it. What I really need to do and inshallah i will after ramadan is sit down and go through craigs list and check out each companies' websites.
