Don't you think the lyrics are a bit sad and the tunes mournful?

hmmm well they are ...

but if you had seen the serial you could have related the stories with the ghazals...for e.g when Ghalib was thrown out of the singers house and he wished to stay there and listen to her...he wrote this ghazal...

hazaro khwaishe aisi ki har khwaish pe dam nikale
bahot nikale mere armaan lekin phir bhi kam nikale

nikalna khuld se adam ka sab jaante hai lekin
bahot be aabroo hokar tere kooche se hum nikale...

yeah you should :) or else go to urdu-poetry . com and may be read a bried history of Mirza Ghalib...

even i started appreciating urdu poetry after watchig the serial...from there i started liking it...:)

Thanks Daagh! I had been wanting to hear Zulmat-Kade mai meri; it was ringing in my head of late.

daagh-e-firaaq-e-suhbat-e-shab ki jali huwi, ikk shama reh gaee so woh bi khamosh hay
