Actually most urban Pakistanis don’t marry their first cousins. The biradari as an institution is something Mirpuri. You marry first cousins, don’t claim that for all Paks, when it isnt true. The wikepedia article on Mirpuris says the word can be seen as an insult.
Mirpuri - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
About Mirpuris denying there origin, I can giveyou two recent examples that I came accross. We had a Mirpuri typist at work, was talking to her mum in Pahari, and when a colleague asked her what language she was speaking, she said she was speaking Urdu. Now a Pathan or Punjabi would never refer to their language as Urdu. And I know a fair few Mirpuris who have started to call themselves Kashmiri.
In an example, a former colleague told us that she was Kashmiri and spoke Urdu. I know enough Kashmiris, and they are proud of Kashur, their language.
Anyway my question was whether you think they are maligned, and from your response you think they are maligned.
