‘sheer ascent’ may not exactly mean sky!

THE LAYERS OF THE ATMOSPHERE
One fact about the universe revealed in the verses of the Qur’an is that the sky is made up of seven layers:
It is He Who created everything on the earth for you and then directed His attention up to heaven and arranged it into seven regular heavens. He has knowledge of all things. (Qur’an, 2:29)
Then He turned to heaven when it was smoke. In two days He determined them as seven heavens and revealed, in every heaven, its own mandate. (Qur’an, 41:11-12)
The word “heavens,” which appears in many verses in the Qur’an, is used to refer to the sky above the Earth, as well as the entire universe. Given this meaning of the word, it is seen that the Earth’s sky, or the atmosphere, is made up of seven layers.
Today, it is known that the world’s atmosphere consists of different layers that lie on top of each other.19 Based on the criteria of chemical contents or air temperature, the definitions made have determined the atmosphere of the earth as seven layers.20 According to the “Limited Fine Mesh Model (LFMMII),” a model of atmosphere used to estimate weather conditions for 48 hours, the atmosphere is also 7 layers. According to the modern geological definitions the seven layers of atmosphere are as follows:
Troposphere
Stratosphere
Mesosphere
Thermosphere
Exosphere
Ionosphere
Magnetosphere
The Qur’an says, “[He] revealed, in every heaven, its own mandate,” in Surah Fussilat 12. In other words, Allah is stating that He assigned each heaven its own duty. Truly, as will be seen in following chapters, each one of these layers has vital duties for the benefit of human kind and all other living things on the Earth. Each layer has a particular function, ranging from forming rain to preventing harmful rays, from reflecting radio waves to averting the harmful effects of meteors.
The verses below inform us about the appearance of the seven layers of the atmosphere:
Do you not see how He created seven heavens in layers? (Qur’an, 71:15)
He Who created the seven heavens in layers… (Qur’an, 67:3)
The Arabic word “tibaqan” in these verses, translated into English as “layer” means “layer, the appropriate cover or covering for something,” and thus stresses how the top layer is well suited to the lower. The word is also used in the plural here: “layers.” The sky, described in the verse as being in layers, is without doubt the most perfect expression of the atmosphere. It is a great miracle that these facts, which could not possibly be discovered without the technology of the 20th century, were explicitly stated by the Qur’an 1,400 years ago.

THE LAYERS OF THE EARTH
One item of information about the Earth given in the Qur’an is its similarity to the seven-layered sky:
It is Allah Who created the seven heavens and of the earth the same number, the Command descending down through all of them, so that you might know that Allah has power over all things and that Allah encompasses all things in His knowledge. (Qur’an, 65:12)

Iron is one of the elements highlighted in the Qur’an. In Surat al-Hadid, meaning Iron, we are informed:
And We also sent down iron in which there lies great force and which has many uses for mankind… (Qur’an, 57:25)

In his book Nature’s Destiny, the well-known microbiologist Michael Denton emphasizes the importance of iron:
“Of all the metals there is none more essential to life than iron. It is the accumulation of iron in the center of a star which triggers a supernova explosion and the subsequent scattering of the vital atoms of life throughout the cosmos.”
Without the iron atom, there would be no carbon-based life in the cosmos…
Cancer Treatment:
…In this treatment it is only the cancer cells that are affected by the magnetic field, since only they contain the iron oxide particles. The spread of this technique is a major development in the treatment of this potentially lethal disease. In the treatment of such a widespread disease as cancer, the use of the expression “iron in which there lies great force and which has many uses for mankind**” (Qur’an, 57:25) in the Qur’an is particularly noteworthy. The 50th Sura, which begins with the letter Qaf, contains a total of 57 (19 x 3) letters Qaf. There are also 57 letters Qaf in the 42nd Sura with a letter Qaf at the beginning. The 50th Sura contains 45 verses. Added together, these total 95 (19 x 5). There are 53 verses in the 42nd Sura. These again total 95 (42 + 53).
"50th sura" ... Quran was not really revealed in the order it is published/printed, so I think this is one of the flaws in author's calculations.

for your first query, that’s because translations are not accurate as the original language. The same translators have used the word “soul” for words used in Quran as “Rooh,” and “nafs” whereas both the words are greatly different in actual context of the language.
Word Muneer in Arabic exactly means a shinning object without its own light but a borrower/reflector.
as for your other questions, as far as my memory serves me right, Quran does not say anything about those for a simple reason that Quran is not primarily a Book of Science but a book of guidance but it contains sceintific phenomena as many as required to be guided. If it does not have some facts stated does not make it a false book for me. It, itself, invites human beings to explore the universe.

I do not want to deny anything, especially the beleifs, but I decided to make some enquiries on the subject…and I found that layers are acutally five, not seven. Ionosphere is just a sublayer.

The Truth About 7 Layers of Heaven
The pre Copernican concept of the universe was geocentric, i.e. they thought that the Earth was flat and was located at the center of the universe. They believed that the Sun and the Moon along with Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus and Mercury that made the seven known objects of the heaven were deities. These were the only objects people could observe with their naked eyes moving in the sky while the stars appeared to be fix.

FULFILLED PROPHECIES OF THE HOLY QURAN
FINGER PRINTS
"Their skins will bear witness against them as to what they have been doing" (41:21)
The finger prints system at borders, criminal investigation cells and immigration centres prove the fulfillment of this Quranic prophecy.
POLLUTION
"Corruption has spread on land and sea because of what men’s hands have wrought" (30:42)
One of the interpretations of the above verse of the Holy Quran is the environmental pollution, caused by human being. "And when the wild beasts are gathered together." (81:6)
Nobody could ever imagine that one day wild beasts shall be captured, tamed and put together in closed and open parks. The establishment of zoo have fulfilled this prophecy.
OCCEANS LINKED
"And when the rivers are made to flow into each other." (81:7)
"He has made the two bodies of water flow. They will one day meet. Between them there is a barrier; they cannot encroach one upon the other." (55:20,21)
"And He it is Who shall merge the two seas together. This palatable and sweet, that saltish and bitter. And between them He has (presently) placed a barrier and a massive partition." (25:54)
This phenomenal prophecy is an excellent proof of truthfulness of Quran. It was beyond imagination of any one living 1400 years ago to even think of linking of oceans which we see today in Panama and Suez canals.
MODERN COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS
"And when various people are brought together." (81:8)
Fast transport systems, telephone, satellite systems and internet have brought so close to each other proving the truthfulness of the holy Quran.
WOMEN’S RIGHTS
"And when the female-infant buried alive is questioned about – For what crime was she killed." (81-9,10)
Modern-day women rights and liberation associations may be brain-child of freedom-loving and egalitarian humanist / feminist people but foretold by Quran centuries ago.
BOOKS PUBLISHED AND SPREAD
"And when books are spread abroad." (81:11)
The invention of printing press and publication houses and consequently spread of books every where is one of the marvellous prophecies of the Quran made in the dark ages of ignorance and illiteracy.
EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL LIFE
"And among His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and of whatever living creatures He has spread forth in both. And He has the power to gather them together whenever He pleases." (42:30)
Having discourse with aliens is still an unrealized dream, but science is progressing in that direction. The presence of extra-terrestrial life has been proved by scientists. The next step is to see them and making a link with them. No religious scripture, except Quran, even hints about this great scientific discovery.

While prophesying about modern transport systems, Quran also foretold the air-traffic system which is an essential part of aviation. A person living in desert 1400 years ago cannot talk about such advance technologies unless revealed to him by God Almighty.

"It never happens that permissiveness overwhelms a people to the extent that they display their acts of sex shamelessly and they are not uniquely punished by God. You need at least a doctor of medicine and an expert of social behaviour at the same time to talk about such behaviours and their fatal consequence. Muhammad (Peace be upon him) was neither of them, but a Prophet of God who didn’t copy from the Bible and paste in the Quran and foretell the same fate of perverts of Sodom and Gomorrah for the future perverts, but a unique disease never heard or known by earlier people, AIDS! The medical scientists are unanimous that this disease is never recorded in the annals of history.

^ whenver the Prophet (saw) spoke of any particular surah, he wud used the first few words of the first verse (not the Bismillah) to identify it....
if Bismillah was the first verse, why wud he particularly choose the second verse....
however, identifying with the first few words of the first verse is very much understandable....

As far as identifying a surah is considered, ofcourse Huzur :saw: wouldn’t have chosen Bismillah to identify, because all surahs have bismillah except one. Simple!
