China, Pakistan to strengthen military ties

BEIJING: China and Pakistan on Tuesday reiterated their resolve to continue their cooperation on military-to-military level for peace and security.

The consensus to this effect was arrived at a meeting held here between Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali and Chinese Defence General Minister Cao Gangchuan, official sources told APP.

The minister, who called on the prime minister at the State Guest House, assured that China would continue to extend all possible support to Pakistan for further promoting its defence capability.

Deputy Chief of General Staff, Chinese People’s Liberation Army Xiong Kuang Ki was also present at the meeting. Jamali said the Sino-Pakistan ties in the defence sector are meant to promote peace and stability in the region. He said Pakistan highly values the assistance being provided by the Chinese government and the army in the defence sector.

**The cooperation of the two countries is of strategic importance, he added. The Chinese defence minister said China attaches great importance to its relations with Pakistan and hoped it would keep growing with the passage of time in all sectors of mutual interest.

The minister further said that there had been exchange of military delegations between the two countries from time to time, to review and promote the defence relations. This, he added, helped to promote understanding in the defence sector and to learn from each other’s experience.**

Jamali had a busy day of talks in Beijing on Tuesday, with a shared concern over the US-led war in Iraq high on the agenda, Chinese officials and media said. Jamali met with a broad selection of China’s recently appointed “fourth” generation of leaders, including parliamentary chairman Wu Bangguo and President Hu Jintao.

“China has consistently advocated that a political solution be found to the Iraqi question within the United Nations framework,” Hu told Jamali according to Chinese state television. “We urge the relevant countries to halt the military action.”

“Prime Minister Jamali appreciates China’s position (on Iraq) and hopes to strengthen cooperation with China in international affairs,” foreign ministry spokesman Kong Quan said at a regular briefing.

Jamali also discussed the Iraqi issue with Chinese Defence Minister Cao Gangchuan, according to Xinhua news agency, which did not elaborate. Foreign ministry spokesman Kong said China’s leaders had explained their “consistent and clear-cut” position on the war in Iraq to the Pakistani guest.

China wants an “immediate end to the war to reduce the humanitarian disaster of the Iraqi people and to safeguard Iraqi sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Kong said. China wanted “the return to the correct path of the political solution to the Iraqi question within the UN framework,” he said.

Before meeting China’s new Defence Minister, Cao Gangchuan Jamali told reporters that China-Pakistan military cooperation was strong. The relationship between China’s military and Pakistan’s is “excellent” and will continue to be so, Jamali said.

"We have always been together,‘’ he said. ``We have an excellent relation, which will continue." Later, Jamali told Cao that Pakistan, which shares a border with China, pledged to work with Beijing in military matters. “Whatever the policies of Pakistan may be in all the matters, in particular in defence, we will carry on those policies and we will act accordingly and we will go hand in hand with the Chinese government,” Jamali said.
