Minivan: Whats a better buy

We are looking to buy either a Honda Odyssey LX or a Toyota Sienna CE 2007. Which one is a better buy? Does anyone have either one of these…tell experiences.

Between a minivan and an SUV which one is better for 6 passengers? And possibly long drives once in a while. OR even to go out as a family to someone’s house. 6 adult passengers…

Re: Minivan: Whats a better buy

Go with the Toyota. :k: Very reliable cars :k:

Re: Minivan: Whats a better buy

i am so confused now. MSN auto says the odyssey is better....have u had any experience with either one of them????

Thanks for the research.

Re: Minivan: Whats a better buy

Odyssey is more expensive than Sienna, and there is a reason for that. Odyssey is rated the #1 minivan for many years. Both are good reliable minivans.

Between minivan and SUV, there are many choices. There are several 6-7 seater vehicles available now.

Here are a few choices. Reasonably equipped all of them with the exception of Acura are from mid-20k to mid-30k. About the same price you will pay for a decently equipped minivan.

  1. Honda Pilot (7-8 seater)
  2. Acura MDX (7 seater)
  3. GMC Acadia (7 seater)
  4. Saturn Outlook (7 seater)
  5. Nissan Pathfinder/Armada (7-8 seater)
  6. Toyota Rav4 (7 seater)

While minivans are generally very comfortable, roomy and high utility vehicles, there is a perceived stigma involved and guys normally will not want to be seen driving one. SUV's, on the other hand, give you a higher driving position which enhances safety, provide a lot of room and towing capability but will likely be poorer in terms of gas mileage and passenger comfort.

Re: Minivan: Whats a better buy

thanks for the info....

We find that comfort is necessary because my parents are at that age where they don't want to hop in an suv, cuz it is higher....and since they are desi they look mostly for comfort....I on the other hand wanted an SUV but I know the third row seat will be very uncomfortable and if we end up getting that car then I will be placed back there....and getting in and out of third row must be a pain.....whereas the minivan's have more space to get in and out.
So its just down to the sienna and odyssey....both have goods and bads....i guess it is just going price wise now....

Re: Minivan: Whats a better buy

I think third row seats suck pretty much in every vehicle (SUV or minivan). God bless little kids who don't make too much fuss when asked to buckle up in the end row.

In your minivan line-up you may also want to throw in Nissan's Quest. Interesting design, competitive pricing and you may actually like it better. Also Chrysler's Pacifica is neither a minivan nor an SUV but is a fairly credible 6-seater and has gained a very decent reputation amongst my friends who actually own it.

By the way, some of the Korean makes have come up with really phenomenal quality minivans, and it may be worth it to check them out before signing the dotted line on a Sienna or Odyssey. Check Kia and Hyundai.

Re: Minivan: Whats a better buy

actually my dad is buying it and he is really hooked on odyssey and sienna.....he won't buy American cars because I guess they aren't as durable...i don't know...he has had past experiences with them so he won't buy them now. My sister has the quest.....she likes it but we can see the difference....and the quest has lower ratings....

Re: Minivan: Whats a better buy

be a desi, buy o-desi :)

Re: Minivan: Whats a better buy

he is being a desi....he wants a full japanese car....

Re: Minivan: Whats a better buy

On a side note, does anyone know when the car companies are going to introduce a totally hybrid minivan? I think green is a better sell to soccer moms than hybrid SUVs ..

Re: Minivan: Whats a better buy

I heard 2009 was the target year for honda and nissan

Re: Minivan: Whats a better buy

I have a Chrysler Town & Country. Very happy with it.

Dodge Grand Caravan is built on the same platform as Town & Country. Pretty good as well.

Not as good as Odesssy or Sienna, but they are much cheaper and will easily last 100K miles.

The Oddessy may be more reliable but is more expensive.
The expected repairs to american cars is still cheaper in the long run than paying for expensive cars.

Re: Minivan: Whats a better buy

whats the difference in base price on these minivans and what is the total cost of ownership on a 5-8 year basis?

Re: Minivan: Whats a better buy

Check this website out, they provide pretty good comparison.

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/

if you’d have asked this 4 years back I would have said, Go with Toyota, but now I can saay both are neck to neck in all features. Sienna is known as lexus of minivans and Odessy is the only minivan that has come close, inface taken the # 1 spot.

if I was buying(toyota family), considering all the options, I would compare the prices and I would buy the one which is cheaper (with the options you have in mind). One extra benefit with Toyota / Honda is a solid resale value just incase if you want to sell it.

Re: Minivan: Whats a better buy

toyota cars are the most dangerous cars on the street though, especially the camry. yoiu know why its so dangerous?

its so damn boring that you will fall asleep driving and get in an accident

Re: Minivan: Whats a better buy

if ya want soming good then go for an hummer ive driven it alot plus you'll look good in it.......

Re: Minivan: Whats a better buy

hummer makes a minivan? hmmmm interesting

Re: Minivan: Whats a better buy

no i ment becz its a 7 seater ....sorry

Re: Minivan: Whats a better buy

^ which Hummer is a 7-seater??? Last I checked (some months ago) H-2 is at max a 6-seater with the optional Adventure Pack. H-3 is a 5-seater. No one cares about H-1.

Re: Minivan: Whats a better buy

the 7th passenger is the deer you just hunted and tied to your roof...
