I have 3 different kinds of fish in my freezer :teary1:
and cmon I think we’re taking the desis-love-to-hoard-things too far. I don’t see what being desi (except for the clothes) has to do with it…everyone loves a good sale…and I seriously doubt any “hoarders” here can match up to these people:
I opened my cupboard just to analyse my wardrobe ( I seriously considered giving out a few clothes to charity after reading Ehle’s posts ) and I realized I still have the tops that I used to wear when I was 18 .. I still wear them
I did take out two trousers to give away but them kept them back thinking when i lose some weight i will fit into them ..
I just cant bring myself to separate from my stuff .. its not really hoarding , its love and memories attached to the things that puts me off living a minimalist life
CB, Why would you want to give away something that holds sentimental value? I have also kept my children’s first clothes and many other things because they hold lovely memories for me. I thought OP was mainly talking about minimalist living around the house. I know people (read mum!) who have accumulated 7 or 8 dinner sets because they were on sale! Numerous glass sets were bought because House of Frasers had a 70% sale on ! And a larger cabinet was bought to acommodate it all! Its this kind of hoarding that is actually quite prevalent amongst the desis that atleast I know.
I think a certain kind of minimalist living can be achieved if we just didn’t buy three, four or five sets of the same things…
sure that’s always a possibility. people change … I sure have in the last 10 years and i’m sure I’ll be different 10 years from now too. My husband is pretty good about keeping me on task Re: no clutter business and I hope I keep up with that way of living. but sure … i’m human … i get attached to things too … for example my daughters infant clothing is going nowhere. ever.
just as an aside … things I give away/donate are of damn good quality … and can be put to good use for years by someone who might not have otherwise afforded it. So in that way … I think they are not wasted … they are still in use … just by someone else.
I never said one has to give up on things of sentimental value … esp if they are still in use … as in CB’s case.
Ms Freudian … got it exactly right … my minimalism isn’t about deprivation or living a thankless stark life or about dying with an amassed useless fortune. its just about buying the best you can afford as needed and getting rid of things that aren’t in use.
@automne yay! glad you liked some of the ideas. you started a great conversation here. Its really interesting to see/read about so many different perspectives.
Iv always been a minimalist..husband and inlaws are too..I already gave away the clothes/things which baby isnt using anymore..husband has a strict policy of 5clothes at a time(thank God for himself only) once he gets new clothes, the other are given away..same clothes are worn at formal events aswell..
I give away things which are not in use..like makeup, jewellery, clothes, shoes etc..I have a limited amount of all these things..I recently bought new lawn suits(cox old ones didnt fit:cb: ) and 1pair of chappals..did zero shopping for myself the whole year..although went shopping with inlaws alot of time but just dont have the urge to shop..imagine its my one and only BIL’s wedding and I was forced into buying a dress for myself:bummer: no not cause Im kanjus but I have so many clothes hanging which were only worn 2/3 times..lol mom is the opp she avoids wearing the same formal outfit twice:smack:
When it comes to shopping for baby I have to fight the urge of not going crazy:(
coming from a home where my mum was almost a hoarder, I'm allergic to stuff. There is nothing in my house that I don't need. I will rarely buy something I don't need but just like, as far as I'm concerned if I don't need it and won't get at least 60% use out of it then its wasteful. People thing I'm stingy all the time but I just don't want to have all that clutter. I'll spend money on things I plan on using and I'll spend a lot to get the best quality.
I have a closet full of desi clothese I got from my wedding, and as far as I'm concerned I'm going to wear them as long as I fit into them whether thats next year or 5 years from now. Some people comment how I'm wearing stuff thats out of fashion but I'm like whatever, thats y all my desi clothes are usually pretty standard so they can stand the test of time.
In my eagerness to have no clutter I'm sometimes to the other extreme where I'll throw away stuff that I really don't need to because I would have used it soon enough. But I can't help it, having extra stuff literally weighs on my mind... I can't stand it!
