Most common is in odd figure like 11 , 21 , 31 , 41 ......and includes your shaadi and valima dress also (if your inlaws are giving it to u !) like 9 normal wear dresses and 2 bridals of valima & shaadi.
There is no hard and fast rule of 11 , 21 or 31 it can 15 ...it can be any other odd no too.

im recently getting my stuff made from both sides. Yes its usually like 11, 21, 31, 41 etc. People some times have 50. Its on your choice if you want to include or excludle the bridal dresses from this counting. Im telling you only about the norm. Choice is all yours. If you are gona have minimum of 11. Then I would also suggest to have some simple ones to wear at home after the wedding. You cant keep wearing those heavy ones 24x7. So just add up to the 11 dress and its can be 15 or 16 or 17.

There is no minimum number of dresses. Just get as many as you will need for a couple of months right after the wedding so you can wear to dinners if you want and around the home. If someone gets 1 dress that doesnt make it the minimum. You should look at your own situation and decide.

See what your need will be. Get what you will be needing in the first couple of months. You can always make more later if need be.

I totally agree. You don't need to make a minimum. Fashion changes quickly and unless you're going to wear all those 50 joras within a year or so, you might find that it becomes outdated. For me at least, I don't want a ton because I won't be wearing heavy joras all that much in the States.

why is it odd numbers? :S i hate odd numbers....hahaha i dont think i want alot either since ill probably be back to my usual clothes after the first couple of months and all the daavats are over, no heavy joras for me thank you! :D

About 10 heavy suits..for the dawats....And some normal suits...
Fashion changes soo fast...it's better to buy less....
I got too much suits...I don't even fit into some suits...
25 from InLaws...30 from my Parents...
That whole countingsystem...11,21,31..i heard that for the first time...

It is mostly an odd number for luck, I guess. Simply for the reason of 'kahin nazar na lage' or whatever. I always heard the talk of 'Ikyawon joray' (51 outfits) excluding the bridal ones. Mostly nowadays they go with '11' or '21' outfits depending upon the generosity of the susralis. Also, simple outfits are not included in the 'bari'. Casual outfits, sweaters, pullovers and shawls are a part of the jahez batch.
The trick is to keep some of them unstitched, so that they can be used as the need arises.

Thanks a bunch girls!I heard about this odd no. system thing from my mom earlier and today my fiance was telling the same and we both were trying to figure out why just odd no.s! lol...subcontinent and superstitions go hand in hand i guess:)
I'm planning to just do the same for my side coz I would rather keep making newer ones after a while than wear what's out of fashion a couple of months later. Plus I think all those heavily embellished clothes can't b worn all the time as any longer than 2 weeks of marriage...phir I might need something lightly embroidered (e.g. needle impressions types)...

In laws go for quality over quantity. At least that's what I have seen in my family when it comes to the bari. As Sumo and B2B said, definitely assess your own situation and then decide. If you are living in the West and don't have much of a desi social life, opt for fewer joras. YOU CAN always order more as need be. My MIL will probably be asking me to make joras from their side. I'm panning on making no more than 7....but they will be super nice, moderately heavy, and appropriate for a dulhan right after the shaadi.
