Millicom International Cellular S.A. (“MIC”) (Nasdaq:MICC), the global telecommunications investor, today announces that Paktel, MIC’s second cellular operation in Pakistan, has been granted a modification to its license and has been awarded GSM 900 spectrum.

Marc Beuls, MIC’s President and CEO commented: **“We are very pleased with this amendment to Paktel’s license as the move to GSM will enable us to capitalise further on the substantial growth in the cellular market occuring in Pakistan. From our experience in our other operations in Asia and Africa we know that the migration from analogue to GSM spectrum will positively enhance both subscriber and revenue growth.” **

It currently has a total of 18 cellular operations and licenses in 17 countries. The Group’s cellular operations have a combined population under license (excluding Tele2) of approximately 444 million people. Does anyone have data on the number of cell phone users in Pakistan and their increase…?

Last I heard..and that was some time back it was between a quarter of a million..and a half million. A big increase from 30,000 because of the Fed Science Ministers move to launch CPP

Being a Paktel subscriber from 95-01, I have always felt that it was a great company, compared to the others i.e. good customer support, facilities etc, however, the only thing it did not have was the GSM protocol, which is not becoming extremely popular in Pakistan, with its embedded and universal advantages, primarily SMS. Now that Paktel is GSM, it will certainly coupe with the outstanding demand for pre-paid GSM connections, which both Mobilink and Ufone have failed to deal with.

being a telecoms professional, I can say Paktel needed this boost since very long to compete with other networks in pakistan.

Wonder when insta phone will go for it. sooner or later every network has to go for UMTS - or 3G and GSM 900/1800 is step in the right direction.

Good Luck to Paktel and mobile community in Pakistan!

shak bhai, I think they will go for this move ultimately... To be honest, I am dissapointed with both insta and uphone, as their customer support and value added services were not upto the mark.

Spock ji, let them inhance the infrasturcture, currently they dont need to care for customers because there are many people to buy phones! once its done, they will improve the service and fight to get the customers.

Its truely a business process!

Isnt it ironic, there are so many people willing to get connections, and mobilink and ufone had to put a halt on the connections!!! they shoudl have used this oppurtunity to upgrade their networks and make more profit, instead, they are frustrating their customers! I had to wait for an year for a jazz connection, and even after that I got it through sources!

Telecoms Shake-Up For Pakistan

Pakistan is to auction two new mobile phone network licences next year and allow competition in the fixed-line telephone business.
The regulator Shahzada Alam Malik, chairman of the Pakistan Telecom Authority, said he expected the new licences to be issued to the highest bidder.

**In the fixed-line business, the privatisation of Pakistan Telecommunication Company (PTCL), scheduled for early next year, should open up the market to competition. **

The regulator told Reuters that a new telecoms policy would be in place in a few months. It would make deregulation easier and encourage competition among telephone companies.

The regulator said he believed Pakistan would attract a lot of joint ventures with local collaboration.

Restrictions

Several earlier deadlines for the sell-off of the have been missed because of changes of government and a lack of interest in the landline business.

But the government’s Privatisation Commission says that at least 11 parties from around the world had lodged expressions of interest in PTCL.

The company has more than 3.2 million telephone lines and owns domestic internet and mobile networks.

**Pakistan is seen to have huge growth potential, with an estimated 1.4 million mobile phone connections for a population of 140 million. **

There are currently four cellular operators - two with GSM and two with analogue networks.

The government has yet to decide whether to allow anyone to enter the market or restrict it to two or three major players.

Civilians starving in Pakistan yet this corrupted government isn't doing anything to help them...

At the same time they are worrying for such things, god, how pathetic is Pak's government?

Pakistan government didnt not spent any money on network, but must have got more money from the license cost. so its in the benefit of poor people of pakistan in a way any contribution to Pakistan state revenues.
