Milk

Okay this is kind of a weird question and I’m nto sure how many of you (esp with young kids) have this issue…I always buy the smallest quantity (half a quart I think) of milk yet it still manages to go bad before we’re able to finsih it. We really dont drink too much milk, but sometimes its good to have in the house, esp for certain dishes. I always buy the one with the latest expiration date but it still goes bad within that time period.
I did some googling and found a few techniques to make it last longer, like placing in a glass jar, buying organic etc…
Anybody here have the same problem? any tested ways to make it last longer?

Re: Milk

^ i don't think very much can extend the shelf life of milk... you guys need to start drinking more of it! its good for you and its delicious!

Re: Milk

You can buy those single serrving milk containers, the kind you're supposedto finish in one go.

Re: Milk

We have exactly the same problem and husband just learned that if you boil the milk and put it back in bottle, it stays good. Also, we have noticed that garelick goes bad quicker than any other brand.

Re: Milk

We have the opposite problem.....we're always running out of milk! And trust me, i buy A LOT! But i have young ones, and Mr Maroush, who drink milk by the gallon...!

I concur with SGC; there isn't much you can do to prolong shelf-life....just start drinking it more! If you don't like it cold, drink it warm/hot. Or use it in a healthy cereal when you feel hungry late at night...i do that when i know i want something bad like chocolate....i opt for cereal instead. :D

U mean the ones they serve in school? u know i've been to sooo many stores and I just cant find them at all!! the closest "single serving" milk i see is yoohoo/chocolate milk, or cafeterias charge alot for those single serving milk cartons.

like chocolate cereal? :P

and yeah, between the two of us, hubby and i mA go through a lot of milk. my hubby's still growing apparently haha

Re: Milk

We finish a gallon size in a week and half. My husband drinks a lot of milk.. he drinks doodh patti instead of regular chai so i guess that helps. Sara you can try making a milk based dessert once a week. I do that. We love fruit custard, raas malai, kheer etc.

Re: Milk

I used to have the problem too as I only use milk for tea and I have very little milk in my tea.

I managed to solve the issue via buying Cravendale. It lasts much longer than any other brand of milk i've tried.

^ We use Cravendale. It tastes so much better…apparently that is because of the opaque bottles…which prevents UV rays from affecting the taste. :hmmm:

You got me! I “try” and opt for a healthy multigrain cereal…but most of the time i fall for the chocolatey goodness that is Coco Pops

Mr SGC is already something like 6ft 4" right…how much more can grow?! :hayaa:

Really??? Good to know GTG!

I have the same problem too… I live by myself and always find my milk going bad too soon :frowning: I have started making a conscious effort of trying recipes where milk is an ingredient.

Here is a great website: All easy and quick milk recipes. Delectable milk-based recipes from all over the world.

Re: Milk

When i was living alone , I could hardly finish the milk when i had it in the fridge , and always ended up needing the milk when it had finished :naraz:

So … I bought Nido powder instead .. doesnt go off , keep it for as long as you want, use it in what ever way you like desserts, daily milk intake :lifey:

Re: Milk

We buy cravendale too - definatley lasts longer.

Re: Milk

Freeze in ice-cube tray as soon as u get it. Then transfer to a zip-lock bag or container and keep in the freezer. Defrost in microwave when u need it.

Re: Milk

its really strange bcuz the milk comes in a packing which can b kept in room temperature(any where) has sooo loong expiry date n the packing for refrigrator is another dat also can b kept for a 3 weeks..so wat do u mean ...u guys do not use the milk for months??in some dishes u can easily use it once in a 2 months...?

I can't speak for Europeans here, but in North America, we generally drink refrigerated pasteurized milk, not packaged milk (like I've seen in Pakistan). The milk must at all times be refrigerated and has a a finite refrigeration life.

Sara - if you think the milk is going to go bad, "phaar" the milk and make milk curds. It's good for making ras malai, ras gullas, barfi, paneer, khoya, etc.

There are quite a few options.

Re: Milk

in my home we drink 1 bottle of millk per day so I buy 7 bottles every week.I leave 2 bottles in the bottom of the fridge and the rest I freeze, when I start to use the second bottle of milk I take down a bottle from the freezer and leave it outside until it completely melts then I put it in the fridge in this way I dont go to the supermarket each day and the milk never spoils.

Same here....milk really should not go off for at least a week, although organic does not last that long.

A really stupid question and I don't mean to be offensive, but is the temperature ok in your fridge?

Re: Milk

Same problem with mee Too :(

Re: Milk

sara simply apply the spoilt milk to ur face. Its supposed to be good for the skin:)
My house ka milk never seems to get bad:teary2: cuz my bro’s drink .
