Right since my last thread proved to be helpful . I am going to pester parents on gupshup more. Now here is a slight issue i am contemplating now a days. My daughter is approaching 2nd birthday. To my understanding mothers cannot feed their babies after 2nd birthday islamically. I am gradually cutting down on her feeds, which is hard since she is the type that goes to sleep while feeding. However after initial tantrums she is gradually weaning.
But now i face another problem she is avoiding milk altogether. I introduced a glass of milk when she was about 16 mths, in the beginning she would readily drink it.But lately she just plainly refuses. It has gone to the point where a small glass lasts all day long. So suggestions how should i encourage her to take a glass of milk everyday. Some advised me of bottle but i just dont want her to go down that road especially now that she is teething. Second suggestion was putting some milo in it which again i dont find such an attractive idea. Honey hasn’t worked either.
Re: Milk Intake
I dont know what milo is, Croquet. But if she doesnt like whole milk, it may be due to a milk sensitivity or allergy. You can try a couple of things. First, make sure the milk is a temperature that she is used to...warm it up to that temp. If she still doesnt like, try giving her soy milk. Or try adding some lactaid to regular milk. If a child has trouble digesting regular milk, it will cause GI upset that may not be apparent to you. You can buy lactaid tabs in most pharmacies, it just helps in digesting milk and milk proteins.
Good luck and post back with results and/or questions!!
Re: Milk Intake
I won't advise a bottle at all at this age. Try cheese and yogurt if she won't have regular milk, the doctor said it comensates for not having milk. Its a common complaint in desi kids to not drink milk, also keep introducing milk at meal times.I give milkinstaed of water at mealtimes and my kids do drink a bit that way.
two sorts of milo here Hayden Panettiere & Milo Ventimiglia A Journey, A Prayer and A Hope
i am talkin of inanimate, edible kind :hehe:
ok on serious note. i have goen through all that when i first introduced cow’s milk. She is not allergic or sensitive to milk. She digests it fine as i said she took it readily early on. Didnt appear to be effected. Usually prefers it cold since it hot here.
Lately she has sort of grown bored or i dont know what of it . If i am taking milk she takes a sip of my glass but doesnt appear to like it enough to drink more.

i have tried that . That is how she took it in the beginning but now she gets all weepy and that effects her meal time as well.
Re: Milk Intake
ok...lets get a bit more creative here. Add some Carnation Instant Breakfast or something like it....this is a high-calorie/high protein "liquid meal" that turns regular milk into a chocolate shake (or vanilla or strawberry). It effectively triples (or more) the nutritional value of milk and my son who would rather starve than eat will always drink his "black milk"!!!
Re: Milk Intake
^is it sugar free?
Re: Milk Intake
try fancy beakers or glasses with built on curvey straws with lots of color and animals etc? u can get other flav of horlicks .. which is healthier than milo.. like strawbery or wheat.. .really yummy. no added sugar either.
Re: Milk Intake
No, it does have sugar in it. There are formulas though that are sugar free if thats a concern...glucerna is one, targeted to diabetics.
Re: Milk Intake
Does she like fruits? Maybe you can try banana milkshake or other berries, with just a touch of sweetener, like honey.
The thing is, since you're still feeding, she knows she has the option between milk from the glass and you. I think once you get her weaned off completely, she'll be more receptive to coming around to milk little by little.
My Mommy always told me there was a surprise at the bottom of my glass :( I never found it though lol!
Try diff flavours Croq, maybe she's bored of plain milk. I've seen "flavour straws" try different straws.. too they love them!
Re: Milk Intake
Milk and home-made chocolate chip cookies? Which child can resist that!! How about chocolate milk?
If she isnt taking milk, make sure she is getting enough calcium through other means, cheese, yoghurt etc
Re: Milk Intake
Croquet, at age 2, a kids needs about 16 oz of milk which is 2 cups.
Here's what you can do. Increase her intake of yogurt, smoothies, cheese. Then slowly give her half a cup of milk, but don't force it if she doesn't finish it. Slowly, she will get used to it.
syani u clever dudette, now that you say it i wonder why didnt i think of that before
. i have a hunch this might just work. i will give this one a shot and then move onto khwateen’s idea.
Re: Milk Intake
I faced the same problem when I stopped breastfeeding, and she is now 4 an she still doesnt drink whole milk on its own, it just dont taste the same as mummies I suppose!! :)
Gina suggested the flavoured straw, my daughter loves the strawberry flavour and it encourages her to drink milk si I think thats a great idea!!
she also likes hot chocolate.
And I give her cheese strings and youghart to ensure she has enough calcuim.:)

Wow! My Mum would use that trick with me! On the bottom, outside side of the glass, Mum would stick those star stickers! So I was always exicted to see which coloured star I was going to get!
