Migraines

Can fasting cause migraines?
I do suffer from migraines usually but not as often as this. I’ve had at least 3 since the start of Ramadan. I got one today.
I never had them last Ramadan.

Re: Migraines

i dont know wether can cause.. but i wouldn't fast then..u have to listen 2 ur body.. thas how i think..

Re: Migraines

No I cant not fast. My colleague keeps telling me to take something but I dont see it as a valid reason for breaking fast. Is there anything I can do to help it or prevent it like eating different foods?

Re: Migraines

tabussum, yes hunger could be one of the factors that trigger migraine.. I used to get migraines if I won't eat lunch but I took medicine for quite a while and now this Ramadan I got migraine only once but it was because of fatigue, hunger, and due to change in daily diet!

you can ask your doctor to let you know the exact details so you can overcome it! :-)

Re: Migraines

Dehydration has been linked to migraines. Make sure you are drinking lots of water after between iftari and sehri time. I guess avoid salty food as well?

Re: Migraines

I think so too…in fact the cause of many of my health problems is dehydration (fever, throat infections, dizzy spells, maybe migraines also) :frowning:

Migraines can be caused by many things…including changing ur eating/sleeping patterns, which is wot mite be happening to us in Ramadan…it’s not life-threatning, so i think u shud still fast…if u usually take medicine when u have a migraine, then u can take it at Sehri i guess, it may help…but i think headaches/migraines are just one of many things that ur body will do when ur fasting cos obviously u’ve taken away things that ur body normally has.

Plus, if u regularly take caffeine in ur diet and have reduced/stopped it since Ramadan…the withdrawals will cause headaches too…medicines like Excedrin may help cos they have caffeine in them.

(P.S. i’m not in the health/medical field, these are just my opinions/experiences…so u may want to consult ur doc if it is becoming worrysome for u)

Re: Migraines

I used to get quite debilitating headaches while fasting when I was a regular coffee junkie. Weaned myself off coffee and don't get headaches in Ramadhan and very rarely in general now as well.

Re: Migraines

Yea i think most ppl fasting will experience some sort of headache at some point, cos our blood sugars are low too...

Try ginger tea...i've heard it's good for migraines.

And try to avoid direct sunlight...the heat and rays can dilate ur brain's blood vessels, which end up causing the most pain for us migraine sufferers.

Or u can always go with a hot oil head massage...always works :)

Re: Migraines

i took my wife to a neurologist and he said hunger can definately trigger migraine..she has noticed it too

Re: Migraines

I think Sarah is right. I used to get headaches and migraines often. I've noticed I get them when I haven't been drinking a proper amount of water on a regular basis. Once I began being more careful about drinking water regularly, the migraines came less often.

Re: Migraines

Believe it or not my contacts were giving me migranes.
Actually I would over use em instead of throwing em out
after 2 weeks. Sorry I went off topic.

Re: Migraines

Tabussuum, aap apne Imam se baat kijiyega. Hunger is one of the major triggers for migraine. Roza rakhna ke nahi yeh aapka sawaal hain, lekin ho sakta hain ke aapka badan itni bhookh sah nahi sakta hain. Socho.
