It is giving too much credit to Microsoft for this. Similar technology was already used in products like:

These products are based on research done by Jeff Han in Courant Institute of Technology (part of New York University). The basic physical property that makes the multi-point interaction system work is called Frustrated Total Internal Reflection (FTIR).
