"On that date Messenger log-ins will no longer work and users must turn to Skype, said Microsoft in an email sent to all Messenger users. The email also encouraged users to update to Skype and familiarise themselves with the service before the switch-off.
**The service switch is a consequence of Microsoft’s acquisition of Skype in October 2011 for $8.5bn (£5.3bn).
**
In November 2012, Microsoft announced that it was switching off Live Messenger in early 2013 but gave no firm date. At the same time, Microsoft made it possible for Messenger users to talk to and swap messages with contacts via Skype.
To help people migrate before 15 March, Microsoft has added an upgrade button to its desktop Messenger that when clicked uninstalls Messenger and puts Skype in its place.
Until the switch-off date Messenger would work as it always did, said Microsoft."
The bold and underlined part is news to me…I didn’t even know that Skype was taken over by Microsoft!!
I also feel that they should have asked for more for skype…no one really uses MSN…I can’t even remember the last time I logged in, not since I got skype…same for yahoo chat…
Re: Microsoft to turn off Windows MSN march 15th!!
Oh yes, Tofi told me about that but I didn’t realize they were totally getting rid of MSN messenger. Wow! I did notice on skype though that you can log in using your msn or facebook in addition to skype id.
Re: Microsoft to turn off Windows MSN march 15th!!
They sent me an email last week saying that "we are retiring the existing Messenger service globally except for mainland China where messenger will continue to be available.
So now Messenger users on desktops will not be able to sign in and will only be able to upgrade to Skype. If you attempt to sign in, a notification will appear, and if you continue, you will be taken through their installer flow to install Skype and automatically uninstall Messenger at the same time.
Re: Microsoft to turn off Windows MSN march 15th!!
I’m sure the rock that you are under is not complaining, but get out from there.
There’s a whole world of platform independent chat services out there, including FB messenger, Gtalk, and Trillian, which not only does everything that MSN ever did but are a lot more secure and goes much further than MSN ever did. I’m sure, like me, there are tons of network admins who have loads of MSN chat logs totally available to be scanned for key terms when needed.
