Good thing about C# is that it started as something similar as Java, but then it kept evolving. First thing is that Visual Studio is best development environment that you'll ever find, and second Microsoft team is releasing newer versions of .NET and C#.
C# has made the rapid development much more easier. Difficult things like threading, semaphore, asynchronous reading/writing, parallelism, sockets, network communication, searching etc etc are now embedded in the language. Most of the libraries are open source and very light weight plus stable.
The only thing that is stopping Microsoft right now is open source/ Free. Means come on, you can't compete with free. But recently Microsoft took over a lot of open source projects, and also open sourced the old technologies. They are heading in the right direction. As soon as they'll go cross platform, it will get huge OR may be come up with a very lean OS thats free :)

Cool. Sounds great. I agree, that the only thing stopping microsoft is open source. If they can compete in that no one can stop them. Quite a few of my very first projects and for the past 16 years have been microsoft.
