microdermabrassion

I have been using retin a micro (for scars not acne). & it has helped a great deal but has not vanished some scars I sustained.
dermatologist has recommended microderma (after a few more months of healing) and I am really into it. Have surfed everything I could online.
But I am still nervous abt it b/c of recent bad experience

has anyone of u have ever done it? did it for what & what were the outcomes?

Re: microdermabrassion

I was thinking of microderma but didnt go through with it because I found salicylic acid peels to be a lot more beneficial.

I have heard its a great procedure for people who want a fresher look and have dull skin. I am not sure about scars though.

Re: microdermabrassion

Personally I have not seen much change in my scar after having had 10+ microderm treatments. However, I have incorporated into my regime, because it is more of a deeper facial which gives your appearance a fresher glow and clearer complexion.

PSquared: I’m contemplating having a glycolic peel done, but the only thing that is pulling me back is the pain and whether it may have an adverse reaction because of my skin colour – since most research says in occasional circumstances the peel may have an adverse affect on darker skin. What results have you seen, and have there been skin reactions you’ve experienced which you were not expecting?

Re: microdermabrassion

I have had it done many times and its a great addition to any facial as it really does perk up the skin - Origins have a really good scrub which is also amazing for it - as for scars i think rather than use any drastic treaments regular exfoliation with the origins scrub makes a bigger difference without any risks.

Re: microdermabrassion

sweetpip: 10+ microderm treatments, is a lot of money. What kind of scars you had? and how ,much improvement did you see?
Except for my newly sustained scars, all the ones are really really old like 15-20 yrs old. To me microderma sounds too good to be true. but therapist is assuring me that I will be happy with the results & it should all clear up with a few months of retin a + microderm.
Did you had any side effects from micro derma? how did ur skin felt & looked afterwards?

Re: microdermabrassion

I was thinking abt laser resurfacing b/c i consider some scars to be very deep but aesthetician thinks microderma can clear them up.

& this is what dermatologist recommended for my new scars few weeks ago.

has anyone noticed any improvment in scar appearance after micro derm?

I've incorporated into my regime with a facial when I go to the beauticians I occassionally like to have a microderm if i have the time. I don't really have scars as such, but just the occasional mark left from a spot that I've picked, there has been some improvement but I still notice them - so I suppose its psychological.

The skin does feel cleaner and fresher after you've had the treatment - if you can afford to do it then I think its worthwhile having if that's what you want to achieve. But, if the scars are very old and significant, then I would recommend something alternative like laser or peels.

Hiya,

I did have one glycolic peel done and I liked it a lot also.

Depeding upon your skin, there might be a little stinging and there might not. When I went to get my peels done, my skin had been through hell and highwater so I felt the stinging quite a bit. However, most people only feel a lilttle discomfort...very tolerable.

I have sanwali complexion and it worked well for me. My scars faded considerably and some are even gone now completely. The tips I can give you are:

Once you have the peel...you cannot live without sunscreen. You need it because your skin is literally unprotected, raw (not noticable to other people though) and can easily get damaged. Remember, every time you have a peel, it literally lifts off about 4 - 5 layers of skin.

Depending upon the sensitivity of your skin, you may scab a little in places. Your skin will literally peel off of your face. PLEASE do not touch the peeling skin no matter how close it is to coming off on its own. You will end up with scars...this is really important to remember. Most people dont scab, I did. Most people only peel a little bit. I was also one of those people who actually picked at my face and did peel remaning skin off on my own. And I ended up scarring a tiny bit but it gradually went away. Not everyone is that lucky though.

The best results are seen by the 4th of 5th peel...so dont be disappointed if you dont see any right away.

Overall, the peels are a great idea and Ive seen some amazing results.

Lemme know if you need any additional info!

Re: microdermabrassion

where did u get that peels done at a derm's office or esthetician? i feel like finding out more abt this thing. do they help with pores too?
i'm seriously thinking abt microderm and i'm actually thinking to buy youthful essence home kit( has anyone used it? the only thing stopping me is they hav tons of parabens in them. if i can get something thats paraben free but no luck so far). thinking to start with lighter home treatments n then may b go for professional ones. last night i did exfoliation using an old tooth brush since i didn't have those clarisonic brushes n just wanted to see how it works with a brush :) i know not recomended butthis morning i saw gr8 difference in my pores plus my nose got so cleaner from blackheads.(since summer has started i'm hav really enlarged pores that i hate) So now i'm seriously thinking microderm. but if these peels helps both with pores n scars i'll try these. n PS how costly they r normally?

I got my peels done at a derm's office so they cost a bit more then they do at a salon. However, when you go through a derm he/she knows exactly what they're doing and can correct any problems that arise in the process easily. An esthetician might not have enough experience or knowledge to be able to identify certain things.

Peels help with everything...pores, skin discoloration, acne, etc. (have you tried masks at home or even ice water?) It makes a differenct but they're pricey. Anything that gives you immediate results will be. On average, I paid about $125 per peel and you need about 5 to see amazing results. The reason I went this route is because I had no hope left with any creams or potions anymore. My acne and scars were beginning to settle in and the worst part was that I had a lot of redness that wouldnt go away. It felt like I was at the end of my rope and I didnt want to go on Accutane or anything similar. Gina sent me a PM suggesting peels after a particularly worrisome thread of mine on acne and I cant thank her enough!

The clarisonic brush is a great tool to have at home, just wish it wasnt so expensive. :( I dont know about at home kits though. You can try them though because the strength is usually weaker so less chances of anything going wrong at home. But at the same time, results will come later.

Usually, the derm will have a list of peels targeting different issues like aging, acne, scars, etc. Mabrook, its pricier to go thru a doctor but well worth it because its your face. They do it once and do it right.

Re: microdermabrassion

I'm considering at home peel too. i saw ppl raving abt makeupartistchoice products. just can't decide which one to go with. ok i dont hav acne prob(recently got a lil break out on forehead but not that horible acne thing) scars from prev acnes yes, uneven skin tone n now ugly pores but surprisingly that brush exfoliation technique shrank them n today whole day i really liked the way they looked. So should i go glycolic or tca peels. i read most ppl saying 8% n 12.5% peels hardly worked for them but then should i start with 18%? kahin beauty k chakkar main khana kharab he na ho jaaiy. my face needs some help but not that bad that i wanted to spend money at a derms. ya tu 12.5% se start keron instead of 8% n just stay with it for a while. one guy was raving abt enzyme peels. so many options just confuse u. n with herbal peel one needs lots of patience.
yea i need professional help don't i ? :)

Re: microdermabrassion

Salicylic acid peels are suggested for people who have acne.

Glycolic peels are for people who have mild acne but are more lookng to fade scars and freshen their complexion.

For concentration, most docs start off at 15% so that should actually help quite a bit Inshallah.

No, you dont need professional help Mabrook! I am sure peels will work great for you...they worked wonders on me Alhumdulillah.

Re: microdermabrassion

So PS r glycolic peels more effective for scars or tca peels? i was leaning towards tca 12.5% or 18% they don't hav anything in between. but do guide me on this one.

PS: Snowman if u don't wanna overspend money try with at home kits of dermabrassion n peels. they are not hard to use ( chk tutorials on you-tube) and might not b as effective or intense as ones at a doc's office but will giv u a good idea of wat is better for u without breaking ur bank :D

PSquared: thanks for the information. Do you have to keep doing peels to maintain the effects? like every 3/6 months or year?

I do not want to keep doing anyting. b/c I am usually happy with my skin. & scars are too old & they don't even bother me (except new ones b/c someone else caused them & I feel violeted).

With microderma, esthetician has assured me that results are permenant but other ppl are telling me stories abt these procedures causing saggy skin, dark circles, wrinkles etc if u don't continue with regular treatments. I am already worried what is going to happend to my skin when I stop using retin a micro.

Is there any truth to these side effects? did u experienced any other changes like thinning of skin? & how long the senstivity last?
Just the retin a makes me not want to touch my face.

You were lucky that you did not scar with your scabs. For me scabbing means scars unless they are very minor..

Just the one session gave you required results? you didn't needed many.

Re: microdermabrassion

hey PSquared....what at home peels do u recommend? any i can find at sephora, drug store, avon, etc??

thanks!

my cousion tried avon micro derm and says it was a complete waste of money.
for peels try a better brand.

Re: microdermabrassion

What would you guys recommend would be the best take home do it yourself sorta kit in the market for this?

How often can you get this done if your seeking professional help? Like once a month you can go for a treatment?

How long does it take to heal?

Thanks

Re: microdermabrassion

I got it done at a local spa once a month for about 8 months on my face/shoulders/arms and i found it be very effective since I didn't have to do anything myself and it gave me a nice complexion overall :)

Re: microdermabrassion

Olay home microderm kit or Neutrogena Systems.
