tell me something about michigan? I could have find the info over the net .. but I think its also better to have views from u guys. Which part of detroit is more desi and which is not? I might end up for my clinicals there (fingers crossed) so just need the input n output about that state. Never been there .. dont know anyone there .. so if more +ive then I might go .. if not then Ill change my plan.

there are lots of desis in detroit and its suburbs. most desis in detroit are students living there cuz of wayne state university. alot of desi families live in brownstown, canton, and other suburbs.
people call detroit unsafe, but i've been living here for the past 4 years and alhamdulillah nothing has happened. you just have to be a little careful. i think its a great place for students to live.
also, are you going to detroit, lansing or ann arbor?

Saginaw is about 2 hrs from DTW (Detroit metro airport).
It is a small place. Mostly doctors there from our (desi) community. There is an islamic center / Masjid. go to islamicfinder.com and put in Saginaws zipcode for details on muslim organizations in the that area. Some numbers will be outdated.
Also, as per what Dewana Tera wrote, I agree to most of it. However, there a a lot of desis even in the east side detroit area. Although most of the desi families live in the Greater Detroit area (meaning suburbs). There is a huge community in Rochesters Hills/Troy, Bloomfield Hills, Sterling Heights (lot of Pathan familiies), Farmington (smaller community), Canton (quite large), ypsilanti/Ann Arbor, brownstown (large punjabi community/Tableeghis). In general Michigan is the largest muslim populated area and it mostly concentrated in the Dearborn area and its surroundings.

Ive been in Michigan since 2002, but not in the detroit area... I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan, which is michigan's second largest city, and certainly ALOT better place to live in than Detroit, take my word for it. As much as I love Michigan, detroit has to be the most depressing and ugly city in the United States IMO (sorry detroit guppies) but the surrounding cities like canton, farmington hills, novi etc are alrighty. If youre gonna be close to the GR area (which is west michigan), let me know if I can be of help. I have loads of friends in the Detroit area too, so lemme know if I can help in anyway...

oh, and one more thing... two of my buddies, who work at Ford lived at farmington hills, after graduating... now farmington hills is considered one of the best places in that area to live in. One night when one of them was asleep, 3 kalluz hopped in from their living room slidin door, beat the crap outt them (they didnt even resist or anything), and took everything, they even took their car which they later abandoned somewhere nearby. Not to scare you bhaijaan, but this was the best place place in the region to live in, and it happened there, so you never know... I think you shouldnt live alone...

I lived in Michigan (Canton & Farmington Hills -- about 20/30 miles northwest of detroit downtown) for over 10 years. Saginaw is about two hours away from where I was. I had a friend of my bro who lived in Saginaw. He worked as medical director of Medical Oncology in a hospital in Saginaw. There aren't many desis in Saginaw. I know that he came to the areas nearby my place for a lot of his desi groceries and stuff every once in a while. This was a few years back. Desi population in Saginaw may have grown a bit now.

Dearborne Michigan is packed with Arabs (very close to detroit)..in fact the entire town is devoted to arabs.....everywhere u look they have billboards written in arabic....halal markets left and right....rows and rows of restaurants. in fact there is nothing but businesses catering to the arab community. It's amazing!
with that said.....it's a great place to visit but id nvr want to leave there. I hear lansing and ann arbor is nice but detroit is like any other city....full of crime and very dirty.
