Miandad set to become highest paid Pak coach

KARACHI: Pakistan’s former captain Javed Miandad is set to become the highest earning coach in the country as the Board has agreed to a contract which will earn him an estimated 10 million rupees annually for performing the job of senior team coach in “national interest.”

‘The News’ has learnt that although Miandad has not signed his coaching contract with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as yet but they have agreed to most of his demands including a monthly fee of $8000 US.

The Pakistan Board Chief Executive Rameez Raja said on Wednesday that Miandad had still not signed the contract but this would be done soon as negotiations were about completed. “I think he needs to sign the contract before the team goes to England because for the Board this is necessary for audit reasons,” Rameez said.

But he was not willing to divulge the financial remuneration, which would be paid to Miandad as Pakistan coach. But ‘The News’ has confirmed from independent sources that the package agreed with Miandad is such that he will make an estimated 10 million rupees per year and perhaps more.

Details of his contract include a monthly salary of $8000 US per month (approximately 460,000 rupees), 3000 rupees daily allowance when working with the team at home in camps or during series and $150 US daily allowance for foreign tours. Besides Miandad will also get other perks like a car from the Board.

It is learnt that all this put together and his total package per year will cost the Board around 10 million rupees or more and this is more than the amount paid to the South African coach Richard Pybus who was with the team in the World Cup.

Pybus was reportedly paid a net amount of $5000 US as monthly salary plus other benefits like allowances which were the same as given to the players who get a daily allowance of $100 US. Before Pybus, Mudassar Nazar had netted Rs 8.6 million from the Board for his 18 months stint with the senior team. Pakistani cricketers have critics have always complained that the Board is wasting its money on paying hefty salaries and fees to foreign coaches and this amount is not paid to them.

However it is not known whether the financial terms with Miandad have been agreed after or before tax deductions.

Great news, our coaches should be paid as much as possible to keep the team on a winning path.

Wow, well goodm luck to him. I still believe he shouldnt have been paid that much. He should have been paid as much as we pay foreign coaches with the incentive of an increased salary should the team start doing well.

There you go.

** Miandad yet to sign contract **

LAHORE, May 29: Pakistan coach Javed Miandad has not yet signed a contract with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) since both parties have reservations on some aspects.

Miandad rejoined the national team as coach on March 20, 2003 and is now going to England on his third assignment, but both PCB and the coach have failed to reach an agreement over pay.

“Yes, I have not signed any contract with PCB, but I am hopeful the matter will be solved before the team’s departure for England,” Miandad told Dawn on Thursday.

Miandad, however, was unwillingness to explain the reasons which were creating problems in signing a contract with the PCB." There are some other reasons except that of money. Ihave no lust for money and more important dear to me are dignity and honour. I did not take a single rupee from PCB since rejoining the team as coach and that is enough evidence I am not running behind money," he said.

Miandad said that he had a short meeting with PCB chairman Lt Gen Tauqir Zia on this subject. “I am awaiting a reply from PCB in the light of my meeting with the chairman.”

When asked will he prefer a similar contract under whichhe had worked with PCB in the past, Miandad said: “That was a good package and I have no objection against that.”

The former Pakistan captain had been receiving remuneration on match to match basis, equal to a senior player’s match fee. But his predecessors, Mudassar Nazar and Richard Pybus, were paid on a daily basis. Mudassar received a total amount of about Rs 8.8 million for an eight-month stint while Pybus received300 pounds per day.

Miandad disclosed that after the World Cup he received three offers of coaching from abroad, but he preferred the national team, because it was his duty to deliver the goods for the nation.

When asked if he agreed with the selection of the team announced for the England’s tour, Miandad diplomatically ducked that question and stated that his only job was to coach the boys and not select them.

“The team selection is the job of the national selection committee and finalising the playing XI is the responsibility of the captain. But I am bound to give advise to both the selectors and the captain if they asked for it,” he remarked.

Miandad parried the question when asked if he was consulted about the technical flaws of opener Imran Nazir before including him in the 16-man team. Imran had been sidelined before the World Cup as the then selection committee headed by Wasim Bari detected some flaws in his batting.

The new committee, led by Aamir Sohail, also did not select Imran for similar reasons for the previous two competitions, but now have opted to give him a chance for the England’s tour, claiming that the player had got rid of those shortcomings.

I actually believe him on this matter. All these match fixing allegations came after the time Imran and Minadad were gone. Those two great players Imran & Miandad, despite the differences between them have always given their best and have always put national interest above their own. Yes, Miandad is trying to be a little too modest here but I still believe that money wont be his top priority.

Miandad:k:

They should have some kind of Performance incentive plus base salary. Not only for the coach but also for the players. I mean, this is an obnoxious amount of money. No offence to Miandad.

And what about imran:confused:…

Seems, Imran Khan will help in the coaching in various cricket academies inside Pakistan. He may not be directly involved in the coaching of our national cricket team. For that we have Javed Miandad. Imran will have a more broader role to groom youngsters with talent and polish them for international level. From there on, Miandad will pick them up as part of the national team coaching.
