I was having a conversation with Queer and Chandbeti in digichat and were busy arguing if Miandad was a good coach or not. I personally think he is. The two others disagree.
Look at the past year the stats are the following:
We won the Sharjah Cup right after the world cup in the final. It was a surprise we got to the finals.
England: We lost the Nat-west trophy 2 to 1.
We beat Bangladesh. White Wash
Then we beat New Zealand. White wash
However NZ beats us in the ODI series (4 to 1) when we are touring them, but win the test series.
We beat South Africa in a test series. But lose the ODI series 3 to 2.
Now India.
Not a bad record considering the entire team has been restructed. We have a new bowling line up. New openers. Only the middle order remains the same. Roughly 4 players are veterans. The rest are new.
He has his good points. he’s got quite a sharp cricketing brain, but two things I don’t like about him are that he’s never been one too good at building team spirit - he likes the spotlight too much as a coach. he should keep a lower profile and let his players shine a bit more.
Secondly I find his tactics too defensive. He insisted on picking that slowcoach opener whose name i forget now for ODI’s even though it was clear he had limited ability, and taking all the grass off the wicket in this game was stupid beyond belief.
Thirdly look at his statements regarding a bowling coach. He says he can sort the bowlers out in the nets and then in the next breath he calls for Imran to come on down and give them some coaching!
Miandad is quite good at coaching youngsters. Youhana admits that Miandad has made him what he is, a successful batsman. But Miandad sometimes uses outdated appraoch in onedayers and tests. Things are changing and he needs to change with the changes. He is a hardworkign coach no doubt but sometimes he wants all authority by himself. During an interview a few months back i remember him saying that why do we need a computer analyst when everything is stored in memory and batsmen realize how they commited mistakes. Thats a baffling appraoch considering every team is benefitting from technology and he needs to do that too.
wake up Pakistan. You have to play cricket like the aussies do. build team spirit, discipline, and responsiblity. miandad is no better or worse than kapil, gavaskar, wadekar or azhar. why don't we have them as coaches? because desis can be good only so much, after that they don't have a clue. wadekar used to say 'why should i tell the player what to do? at this level they should know how to bat, catch, field etc' yeah, right. the main reason india is doing well now is because of wright. actually pakistan should get him as coach.
Keep Miandad as "batting coach" only. Don't let him believe that he is "karta dharta" of the team, otherwise kick his ass around. He likes too much authority and does not want to learn new methods of coaching, approaching a game, planning etc.
I don't think Miandad has shown much sense as to even his own players as Ian Chappell has. Chappell pointed out today that Razaq is not comfortable playing leg spin bowling and yet Miandad insisted earlier that Razzaq had been played as a batsman. Quite worrying that an Aussie should know more about our players than our 'think tank'.
Then there was the comment something along the lines of Pathan being a dime a dozen bowler. Which makes me wonder does the guy even do his homework?
p.s. the flop batsman who couldn't hit the ball off the square yet was Javed's favourite in ODI's was Mohammed Hafeez. Remember the 48-1 after 15 overs starts in the matches against SA?
The problem with Pakistani Cricket scene is that there are too many chiefs but no Indians. Every douche bag from the past, present and the future wants to have a say and the spotlight. Plus, there is no concept of 'coaching' in our schools and colleges. We are not told to respect and listen to the coach. Just like we lack respect for our academic teachers, coaches are treated even worse.
I have always felt that no matter what foreign or domestic coach we hire, our 'superstars' won't listen to him. But, I would always prefer a foreign coach as he would bring a different dimension and less legendary baggage.
Pakistani cricket team is a hopeless case. It's been volatile in the past and will remain so in the future. This is how we are. It can not be changed. So, in order to reduce mental trauma to myself, I've re-evaluated my expectaions from these clowns. Since the traumatic defeat to the Australians at Lords in 1999, I watch them telling myself that at least we are better than the Bangladeshis.

this is a defeatist mentality and a trait of our team's that we fans hate. yes, the Pakistani team has underachieved because of many problems. But are their problems any different from what diseases afflicts our country as a whole?
I think we should do something productive especially since we have a lot of good writers and fans who have a good know how of the game. Perhaps a thread should be opened where we would list a problem, its cause and a long term solution. Then, we can conspire to send this document to the PCB. Any takers?
The issue of a good/bad Coach/Player will never end in India/pakistan reason being, we as fans expect too much.
Remember the 1st world Cup match India lost, fans smeared players homes with black paint, vandalised their cars, burnt their effigies.
Then when they reached the finals without another loss they were again put on pedestals and idolised.
Same with pakistan the same pakistani fans who a few days before wanted yousuf's head on a platter.
But today when he scored a century with flair and passion, those same fans could not stop praising him enough.
Coming back to the main issue Miandad is a person who can think on his feet but only as a batsman, which is his strong point, but as a bowler he does lack imagination.
Hence my repeated rants about a specialist bowling coach.

i have mentioned this many times here - i m glad someone has spoken what i have been saying all long - when you look at Pakistan's side you see lack of experience - from batting to bowling - i admit the youth has shown progress but you always gotta go with veterans - specially against elite teams.
had Saeed, Wasim, Waqar were playing - Pakistan wouldn't be facing this situation like they are now!

that's nonsense. I was angry at Youhana exceeding his limits as vice captain and his century in a losing cause means nothing to me. he can score 400 and if the team lost, I wouldn't give a damn. if the team wins and he scores a match winning 2, then I'd happily applaud him.
actually ALOT - you can't count on youngster to pull the rabit out of hat - certainly NOT in situation and much hype series like this - you should always go with your full-strength and experience players.

I beg to differ here. I dont think fan's expect too much. Fan just want soem decent performance. Even small wins here and there makes them happy.Thats why these player have god liek status. What the want is just fighting performance. I dont think if this match has gone into last session og 5th day and Pak has lost by 5-6 wickets then Pakistani fan would be so pissed. They would definitly be sad but not pissed.I dont see people criticzing John wright or Dave Whatmore even when India or Pak loses (except for some pissed of ex-cricketter who couldnot get the job).
So this is a flawed logic.
Now coming back to Javed. I dont think he has what it takes to be a good coach. He has to big an ego to be one(Else he would be talking to Ian Chappel and Dean jones who are commenting on TV about Indian team. They have seen it all in AUS). His style is medival and he is a dictator.
Modern day cricket in not what it used to be in 80s. it has changed and so the attitude needs to change. Good example was his coaching from dressing room during ODIs.
Was he a great batsman => YES
IS he a good Coach ==> NO
