India’s most celebrated artist MF Husain has been offered Qatar nationality, according to a report in The Hindu.
The report said that Husain was “Honoured by Qatar nationality” but deeply saddened by his enforced exile and the need now to give up the citizenship of the land of his birth, which he has lovingly and secularly celebrated in his art covering a period of over seven decades.
Indian government does not allow dual citizenship, therefore, Husain will have to give up his Indian passport if he decides to take up Qatar citizenship.
The report also said that Husain did not apply for Qatar nationality and that it was conferred upon him at the instance of the modernising emirate’s ruling family.
The artist has been living in Dubai since the hate campaign against him started in India in 2006.

Reason is that Hussain was asked repeatedly to stop depicting goddesses in such positions. He might be doing it for art but there was already a public sentiment against his exhibitions in bombay.

According to reports yesterday RSS leader already said that they had nothing against MF hussain.

Muslims in iran and some other countries have depictions of prophet..beautiful ones..still someone could be murdered for making a good movie on prophet. Also remember kurt westergaard still remains under protection for the cartoons coz some lunatic can slit his throat anytime.
And while some Orthodox Sunnis may disagree with that, no one has threatened them over their respectful portraiture of the Prophet and his family.
Who, pray tell, was murdered for making a “good” film on the Prophet? If you’re referring to Moustapha Akkad, who directed The Messenger, he was killed in a random act of terrorism, not specifically murdered over the film (which didn’t actually portray the Prophet for that matter).
I’d agree right away on first part..because these paintings predate sunni wahabism that has swept world now..

Disgracing Allah, Prophet PBUH or other Islamic dignatories is same if some one disgrace Hindu gods or godesses. One must respect the sanctity of relegious beliefs whether Hindu, Christian or Muslim.
No…people still produce portraits of the Prophet, Imam Ali, and Hazrat Fatima in Iran and other Shia-majority areas. Nor has Wahabism “swept the world” today - they still only represent a small minority in most of the Muslim world.

A talented person like Hussain was hounded out of India by those who did not have the courage to take on him using the judiciary. Debates could go on about the element of greatness in his work of art and courts could decidewhether he intended to insult the Hinbdu sentiments or it was nothing but another artistic expression. By not doing so, not only did India lose one of its immensely worthy artists, but it also reflected on the limitations of the civil society there.
