Metformin-Experience and Side effects!

My OB recently recommended me metformin…i have recently started taking it…im also taking levothyroxine 100mcg (recently upgraded it from 50mcg to 100) and prenatals…its been a week now that im feeling very fatigued, sleepy, loss of appetite and sometimes nauseous too…i think its probably due to the medications that i have started…what about metformin?how was your experience and did you had any side effects?Im keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that i get some good news soon…i hope metformin works!

Re: Metformin-Experience and Side effects!

I just happen to notice you recently upgraded Levothyroxine from 50 to 100 mcg. Does that mean your thyroid function is not completely under control? And I assume you are taking metformin for pregnancy? Thyroid function has to be well controlled before you concieve, because otherwise there is a high risk of miscarriage and often times a low thyroid is the cause of delay in conception.

Re: Metformin-Experience and Side effects!

my tsh level was high....although it has been dropped and is less than 5 now, the upgradation is for further lowering its level! according to my OBGYN, its safe to start trying!

Re: Metformin-Experience and Side effects!

Metforim is basically given to control PCOS or insulin resistance to start ovulation. It is a long acting drug so takes about a month to start working. It side effects are nausea, loss of appetite and even sometimes diarrhea. But that should get better once you start taking it reguarly Your OB should start recommend to start metformin slowly to ease the side effects by taking 50mg, to 100 mg and then 150 if you need it.

It worked for me for all my pregnancies. Hang in there.

Re: Metformin-Experience and Side effects!

Re: Metformin-Experience and Side effects!

I took Metformin along with femara the cycle I concieved. I was taking 150 (50 gm tablets three times a day). my doctor advised me to take one pill a day for a week and then two pills for the 2nd week and then three pills, I found this to be the best way to get to my recomended dosage as my body got used to it.

Metformin can cause GI problems, and nausea but you'll learn the tricks. Try not to go long periods without eating, I found it helps to take the pills with food.
