i do know what you mean. so no its nor sketched neither prototype.
it is actually separate technique of drawing, which have its own material and process.
well for the copy right, under the law there is a time period , after that that art work not is owned by the artists heirs. (i think its artist life+ 100 years)
and those copy right laws were not present in 14-15 century :D...j/k
whereas most of these works are commissioned so cant really say what belongs to who?
^ well mine is not for painting purposes. i do see what you mean, and i gonna talk to my teacher. he is italian, studied in italy, so who else gonna know more than him.
i also thought that my work is incomplete, but during the critique not only he liked it a lot but also when i said it is not finished yet, he strongly opposed my views and said no its "DONE! DONE!"
according to him this way your canvas breathes. there is a rooms for viewers visualization. there is process of shallow- depth involved. viewers eyes actually revolves around, and they dont get tired. viewers questions yourself about its being completed or not? your mind also depicts; hence it makes it viewers-artist collaborative piece.

Please ask him if the style of 'incomplete-looking' drawings that are really 'done' is called 'Cartoon'. I understand that they may have a different purpose these days and people make 'incomplete' drawings on purpose these days because of the reason explained by your teacher.
I am not confusing the method that you have used to make it ... which is of course metal point ... and a brilliant piece it is ... mashAllah and he was right ... it is DONE ... no more work is required in it.
this reminds me of a huge gift i once received...it was a colourful painting with cuba libre surrounded by grapes. my father refused to have it in his house so i had to sell it :(
no its not done on paper. it is actually we made something technical and we put that thing on the masonite and then draw on it. and if you want to erase anything, you use damp cloth as an eraser :D
