Yesterday, I went to a concert with my older son (our first Metal concert together). Not my kind of music, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was in the city – BB KINg on 42nd st. there were 5 or 6 Black and Death Metal bands. The main band was Hate Eternal and it literally shook up the whole times square. A regular death metal band only has 3 musicians: a drummer, a basest and a lead guitarist, one of them doubles as vocalist. The songs are sung in very low pitch (almost screaming), with 7 out of 10 words in a song that end with ck. Everyone in the audience is referred to as an M’fer out of love I guess. After getting over the initial shock of loudness and lewdness, the music in fact is not that bad. It is very high tempo and fairly intelligent.
My son was the youngest in the crowd, and I was the oldest. The average kid there was a High school senior/college freshman. Very interesting crowd, not many girls, but all boys dressed up in fatigues and black. I was the only one not in black. Now I know better.
What I learnt from this is (in addition to having a grand time with my son) is that as we grow older, we often shut ourselves to experiencing other things and become rigid in our likes and dislikes. I used to get headaches when my son would put his CDs in the car while I drove him to places. I talked to many of the performers last night, and they had their regular jobs and played music only because they loved performing, and also because they couldn’t make ends meet by just playing music. Which was really sad to know. This morning, I woke up with a hangover but I didn’t get a headache driving.

In the 70's I loved the first metal bands. I can still sing Steppenwolfs' "Ballcrusher" word for word. Wanna hear? Never mind. I'll never forget my mother storming upstairs into my room telling me to turn that racket down only to find out the "racket" was coming from my headphones on my head. Ah, volume.
