Does anyone of you remember seeing an old classic Ek Muhabbat Sau Afsanay aired in the 1970s by Lahore Television?

I do .. remember the first or second episode also .. the one with Naveen Tajik .. it was just classic .. dont remember the hero .. dont know why i think that it was Asif Raza Meer

name of the play was Quratul-Ain

Written by Ashfaq Ahmed for his series ‘Aik Mohabbat Sau Afsaney’, and featuring the beautiful Naveen Tajik, ‘Quratul Ain’ meaning light of the eyes, is undoubtedly the best PTV plays ever produced. It was aired during the mid-seventies.

They remade the series in the 90s and I remember watching Quratulain and was totally hooked! Some of the stories were not my taste at the time but I am sure if I watch them now I would appreciate them more. Ashfaq Ahmed is so twisted and such a genius! I remember there was a show he used to host on PTV, cant remember the name, but he was so insightful and had the best stories to tell.

sigh...the good ol days of pak television!

AIK MUHABBAT---SAU AFSANE by Ashfaq Ahmed for PTV Lahore

AIK MUHABBAT, SAU AFSANE
was a thirteen episode series
of plays adapted from and based on
ASHFAQ AHMED's
short (love) stories--some based on reality also.

Late Muhammad Nisar Hussain a.k.a MNH was the Executive Producer
and Director of the 13 episodes...at PTV-Lahore Studios sometime in late 70's..or so.

Based on my interactions with;

  1. Farrukh Bashir, current GM PTV, Lahore
  2. Bano Qudsia w/o Late Ashfaq Ahmed
  3. Sarwat Atiq,
  4. Akhtar Vaqar Azim former MD-PTV
  5. Ishrat Ansari and
  6. Yawar Hayat

I will give a detailed account of some of the
most remembered stories under AMSA **starting with;**

"QURAT'UL'AIN"

which had;

MAHNAZ RAFI & Late ZAFAR MASUD in lead

During a detailed discussion with BANO Aunty
on phone the other day--where she also spoke
to my Mom and Dad (that she is the moo boli sister of my Dad)
I got the names of all the 13 plays which were done at
PTV-Lahore by MNH in 1985-86.

Unfortunately--the paper on which I wrote the names of
the 13 plays, got lost--though I do remember two-three names like;

  1. AMMI,
  2. BINDRA BANDD KI KUNJ GALLEE MEIN,
  3. OOBAAL and of course
  4. QURAT'ULAIN.

So now I'll call her again coming Sunday and refresh
the names/list and will cascade the facts & details
about each play with background.

Indeed NAVEEN TAJIK played QURAT'ULAIN
but few would know that she made her debut
from AMSA's "QURAT'ULAIN"...

Thanks Arjay for your efforts to find out facts about AMSA.
Although I do not know anyone in the TV world nor anyone knows me,the only thing I depend upon is my memory,which at times fails me and at times works for me.
I can't remember everything about AMSA,however may I correct your information a little bit:

*AMSA was aired either in 1974 or 1975 not 1985-86
*Zafar Masood and Mahnaz Rafi acted in one of the plays but not in Qurat-ul-Ain.
*Only three actors performed in Qurat-ul-Ain.Namely:Naveen Tajik(Ujala),Jameel Rabbani(Akhtar)and Mustansar Hussain Tarrar(Aboo).

Naveen Tajik is now happily married and lives with her family in North Dakota.Mustansar H Tarrar resides in Lahore while I was never able to find anything about Jameel Rabbani who played Naveen Tajik's boyfriend.He was probably never seen on TV again while Tajik made her way to Lollywood,acting in a few films then got married and later got settled in US.
About Naveen Tajik I found some info from her daughter(who looks a lot like her).She told me that she has never seen her mom's TV dramas and would like to see if anyone has it.

The TV series was set in the backdrop of Lahore in 1970s.

By the way,do you know Zafar Masood died in a fatal road accident in Cairo,Egypt sometime in the early 1980s.

  1. **YOU ARE RIGHT..I mistakenly mentioned of 80s...(I acted in BINDRA BANDD KI KUNJ GALLE MEIN..in 1974 when i was in Lahore for my cousin's wedding..) **
  2. **I met jamil Rabbani but once with Sikander Shaheen and Khalid Abbas Dar..in Lahore at some function at Yawar Hayat's.I think he is also settled abroad....but I have to find out about ZAFAR MASUD not being in QURAT'ULAIN because it was BANO AUNTY who told me that--but age telling--she could have been gilted by her memory! Nevertheless, I'll revert. **
  3. **I never worked with Naveen Tajik though i did meet her thrice in MNH's room..when I use to visit Lahore Centre to meet my two buddies---Yawar Hayat and Khalid Saeed Butt. Naveen was indeed the prettiest and highly cultivated person full of geity. She knew how to carry herself--that she couldn't survive the shocks of film industry! I am glad she is happily settled and Masha'Allah..her daughter is so well nutured. Pls tell her that all the episodes of AMSA including QURA'TiULAIN are in the archieves and I am in touch with PTV's MD Arshad Khan to re-telecast them. The last time I discussed the re-0telecast of AMSA was with Sherry Rahman..who is well known to me---but alas! the dream was short-lived that she is off from Info.Ministry now. But I will persuade Arshad to do something in this regard. The only lament of PTV is that once they retelecast it--it will land up on YOUTUBE and in market for sale by a certain class which has messed up everything on COPYRIGHTS in Pakistan. **

See my above post no.7 Sir...in which i mention ZAFAR as LATE! *In fact I was in bahrain when I heard the disasterous news from **Ishrat Ansari...on phone i was regularly in touch with. **I have done at least 12 plays with Zafar--two serials including. How can one think that I wouldn't know of Zafar's sad demise off car accident between Cairo and Alexandria...*

Thanks so much for the wealth of info on AMSA.That was much more than anyone could have wanted to know.Thank you again.
Zafar Masood,certainly,acted in atleast one AMSA episode,that with Mahnaz Rafi and it was a classic act.
His death was a severe blow to PTV and even I was saddened to know of it.I remember the news found a tiny two line space in Jang at that time.Sad indeed.

I am really excited to know that you have actually met Jameel Rabbani.When exactly was that?Immediately after AMSA or several years after?
Its a small world and internet has made it even smaller.I will keep trying to locate him wherever he is,may Allah keep him safe and in good health.

Qurat-ul-Ain has once again been hijacked by a Karachi-Based marketing company,who lost no time in putting it up on Youtube,the whole of it.
The opening of the episode is awesome,so typical of MNH…Jameel Rabbani and Tajik are shown biking around in Lahore and around Jahangir’s tomb and picnicking by the canal and the scenes are coupled with a moving tune.

Arjay,you have worked under MNH and have met him too,i am curious to know about that elusive personality who always evaded interviews and publicity yet his work speaks for itself.

AMSA and later the series of long plays Dramas 83,84,85,86 were all directed by MNH,hence we know Lahore TV's brilliant and legendary television works in the 70s and 80s.
Fehmida ki Kahani Ustani Rahat ki Zabani was a remarakable TV drama,penned by Ashfaq Sahab and directed by MNH.

I would be waiting with my fingers crossed for your writeup on AMSA coming up this Monday to see whats there that we haven't discussed so far.

I wish PTV invests a little money in improving the quality,audio and video and then digitizing those classic TV dramas.Technology to do that is cheap these days and can be bought in Hong Kong or Singapore.I read somewhere that old,grainy TV shows can be vastly improved as if almost new using that technology.

When you talk to Arshad Azeem,you can give him the suggestion.
PTV's dramas are its priceless asset and we are proud PTV produced those gems.

Most the ones are from AMSA..but not all! There were only 13 episodes on AMSA..that I remember..as right after AMSA I got married and got posted abroad. In fact AMSA's "BINDRA BANDD KI KUNJ GALLEE MEIN" was one reason that I met my wife-to-be, by chance at a wedding in lahore..and she was my neighbor of 50's from Karachi..and I remember I thanked MNH during the recording that I had met her just a day before the recording...and took the decision that I will marry her--come what may! and it took me solid two years to follow up on her and finally convince her of my love for her---something which Ashfaq Chacha, who attended my wedding with Bano Aunty, said, was a perfect plot for a story under AMSA itself! One reason why I am so infatuated with AMSA...my friend!

Let me have a re-check on all of AMSA's as i am to speak to Bano Aunty and Akhtar Vaqar tonite on AMSA.

The remake of ASMA was quite shoddy. I love the series directed and produced by MNH. You can tell the difference if you watch qurutualain.
