MUMBAI: Additional police have been called out in the upmarket
Lokhandwala neighborhood of suburban Mumbai after actor Salman Khan
allegedly threw a nightlong tantrum outside actress Aishwarya Rai’s
apartment Wednesday night.
“We have been told to carry out frequent patrolling at night since
Thursday,” a police official posted at the neighborhood told IANS.
The two film stars are said to be quite close and are believed to share
a tempestuous relationship. News reports say that Khan, a frequent
visitor to Rai’s home, was refused entry during the early hours of
Thursday. He spent most of the night banging on Rai’s door injuring his
hand in the process. According to some reports Khan was later allowed in
while other reports said he dozed off at the entrance of the actress’
house.
Police denied any first-hand knowledge about the incident as no
complaint had been filed with them. “We did not receive any calls from
the residents either, stating that they were being disturbed,” a police
official said. He said any complaint to police outposts in the area
would have ensured that a patrol arrived on the scene within minutes.
Police sources say they are often called to the scene when movie actors
living in the posh Lokhandwala and Juhu areas create a racket,
particularly at night. “Residents often phone at night to complain about
film actors disturbing the peace,” a police official at the Juhu police
station, speaking on condition of anonymity, told IANS. He noted that a
strict warning and the threat of imprisonment invariably worked. “Even
if they threaten us, they are quick to apologize the following day,” the
official said.
Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai were the lead pair in Hum Dil De Chuke
Sanam during the shooting of which their relationship blossomed,
according to reports in trade magazines. A Mumbai-based Web site created
quite a stir recently by posting sneak photographs of Khan and Rai
cozying up in a car outside a shopping center.
