Do most of the ladies here plan what they are going to cook at the start of each week? My ammi used to do that, and then shop accordingly… but my dad is having such a hard time with cooking in variety! It’s like the same exact foood week after week: bhindiyaan, massar chawal, chholay, chicken salan, methi, aloo bhujji, and then usually another rice dish with chicken kababs for the seventh day and its getting so old already!
Tomorrow is food shopping day and I know this sounds retarded, but if someone could help me wtih a menu for the week, that’d be great cuz then I can buy all teh stuff in advance!
P.S. It doesn’t have to be anything extraordinarily special, just normal everyday saalan you cook in your own home too… but good stuff the whole family can eat. Me personally I cant do the whole chholay, bhindiyaan, and aaloo stuff, too yucky if its with anything other than naan!
I usually like to have a variety. Here are a few choices.
Baked pasta & Garlic bread
Bhunna meat with roti/naan
Bengan ka bharta
Grilled salmon with steamed veges
Kidney beans with boiled rice
Pizza? (Make at home or order in)
Bhindi :-p
You could always add biryani or pulao to your menu. You could also make seekh kebabs, and have it with naan, salad, and chutney. How about beef chilli with toasted french bread. You don't have to stick to one type of daal either. Try other kinds and have it with roti/paratha instead of rice. This is more complicated, but you could always try aloo or mooli parathas.
hmm my family is very desi-food oriented! it's always some kinda salan, or stew, or daal/chawal thing! no pre-planning..... basically make a few dishes for the week since i work full-time n doesn't leave me no energy to lift a finger once i get back home! i personally love to cook, so ideally id cook everyday but life doesn't really work that way :(
hmm well u didn't say what kinda food you like? some people are non-vege's so don't know if you'd like fried okras (desi style). i love it so much that i use it as a spread as well on my bread!
first shweets makes an appearance and now ceebs, what is this world coming to
how have u been?
for new dishes try baked stuff.
something yum that i made recently, get an large eggplant slice it up in discs of medium thickness. lightly saute them with salt and pepper and layer ur baking dish with them. add cooked qeema in toamto sauce/onions, however u like it, cover with more eggplants. pour a mix of yoghurt/egg over it. it should be a 1 cup yoghurt and 2 egg ratio. make at 375F till the top is golden brown.
We almost never have fish in the house... its always chicken or some sort of veg.. and again, never really do pasta anymore...but ill definitely look up some more pasta and baked recipes, thanks :)
I have a very limited time to cook with work and home+kids so, I get 2-3 kilos of mince every week and turn it into koftas, chapli kebabs, seekh kebabs on those wooden skewers, mince pie and hamburgers and freeze the lot.
The kebabs and hamburgers I grill 'em straight out of the freezer, takes 5 minutes on each side.
Koftas just have to make gravy and take around 20 minutes.
Pies take around 20 minutes in the oven
Just saves me so much time hassling over what to cook every day and having fresh food on the table
Other than that, I get minute steaks, again easy to grill in under ten minutes with steamed vegies/mash potatoes.
And when Im in a mood for salan, just chicken helps.
No beef takes ages to cook
Pie is the easiest to make after hamburgers and kebabs.
^how do you get the kebabs to taste fresh after being frozen for some time? My dad's been doing the same thing, making the kebabs and freezing them, but for some reason they just dont taste very fresh... very dry and hard! yuck!
I add Oil to the dough in all my kebabs, cause i noticed the kebabs were turning out to be dry and becoming crispy under the grill. That stopped them from doing so.
I dont make the chaplis from desi recipe or shaan it never tastes authentic.
I use hamburger mix, add piyaaz, dhania and anar dana to it.
