Menu choices

Hello all,
I’m trying to finalize the menu for my wedding in April. My wedding is mixed American/Pakistani, and the venue is an American restaurant, but they can cook some desi dishes.
We’re having a sit-down, plated dinner with an appetizer course. So I’m wondering, what are some good options for a desi appetizer course? The main desi entree that will be offered is lamb biryani, so something that goes well with that would be excellent. Also, how should the biryani be presented—should we have some additional veggie dish with bread on the side, should there be extra meat with broth on the side for people to pour on their rice, etc?

Re: Menu choices

for appetizer a lot of people do chaats or you can have small plates of bbq'ed chicken or chicken tikka served at each table with spicy/sour sauces on the side.

biryani is usually served at all paki weddings. u dont need to have an extra dish with meat and broth on the side for the rice cuz usually it is eaten alone or with raita/yogurt.

you should speak with ur fiance and see if he/his family want another paki dish at the event. if they do i say go with a completely veggie dish or some meat dish with broth that people can have with bread incase they dont want rice.

Re: Menu choices

some good options for a desi appetizer course:

samosay or small chicken tikka pieces or chicken skewers with chuteny for appetizers

For dinner plate

Lamb biyani
BBQ chicken piece
Vegetable - potaotes or spinach with potatoes

For the bread - (naan or roti) ou can have that in a bread basket on the table already. Also raita can also be on the table so it doesn't have to be served with the plates

Re: Menu choices

I dont remember exactly but for our walima we had chicken stuffed in puff pastry and one other appetizer. It looked elegant but was desi enough for a desi crowd.

We will have Fried fish and Spring rolls for appetizers

Re: Menu choices

I have a different perspective, taste what the restaurant makes best and have at least one of those dishes. My cousin had his wedding in a hotel in CA they said they could 'make' the pakistani food. It was unedible. The rice was sticky the meat was under cooked the vegetables were undercooked the only highlight was the desert and the 3 cheese lasagnia (which was the vegetarian option)

Sumorani is right Biryani is usually eaten with Raita so I don't think there is any need for a side dish just for biryani. U can however add another side dish for people who are not big fans of rice.

Meat dishes can be Chicken Makhni, Chicken Qorma, Chicken Karhai. Nehari since you were talking about meat with broth.
Vegie dishes can be Palak Paneer, Chicker Cholay, Baghar-e-baingan, Bhindi Fry, Mix vegie fry.

Some more options for appetizers Chicken pakoras, Cocktail samosas., Bhel puri, Pani puris. I know Pani puris are usually a hit among desis.
What about mini club sandwiches? I am thinking about doing those for a change on my wedding.

Eeee. True that.
