Has anyone had to cope with mental illness in their family or social circle?
Re: Mental Illness
serious replies only, please
Re: Mental Illness
mental illness as in like the mental asylum level or the dual personality or sudden mood swings also count
Re: Mental Illness
Yes, I know of two individuals close to my family who suffer from schizophrenia. One is recieving medication. Sadly no therapy even though her schizophrenia is not severe, as she is in Canada and is Pakistani, there are communication and cultural problems.
I knew another as well but she died some time ago. People treated her rather barbarically by locking her up in her room and depriving her of nearly all social and human contact.
Some cases of clinical depression as well.
Why?
Re: Mental Illness
I think she means diagnosed mental illness.
Re: Mental Illness
bipolar - my sister
Re: Mental Illness
yes, severe depression ...two people
Re: Mental Illness
Not necessarilly Sarah…anything which guppies feel falls under the category of mental illness is fine. It needn’t be a diagnosed condition.
Re: Mental Illness
All of the above.
Re: Mental Illness
umm yeap, i have about 2-3 people in my family... one is depression.. she comes in and out of her mood. I personally think she is epileptic (sp?) but noone else seems to think so..
my chachoo is also mentally disabled.. a beautiful beautiful individual mashallah... the purest and the nicest of hearts. So childlike.. as a kid ive always hoped he would get better.. like snap out of it.. personally i think if he wasnt treated so badly, he would be fine.. he could have been married and all.. but the society he lives in.. the people hes surrounded with just dont understand...
another aunt, similar to my chachoo.. people kept calling her pagal that she ended up believing it... she too could have been living a normal life... but tsk...

Re: Mental Illness
unfortunately , i know quite a few ppl with these illnesses
two children ....for both of them it started with high fever n then fits.....apparently one of them is diagnosed with epilepsy....n the second one is now not mentally stable ....hardly walks ...can't talk properly ....can't control movements n needs to be always supervised ....sadly he is the first kid of my cousin
then there is someone in my inlaws extended family ....its a girl ....she had some problems with eyes ....as an infant .....doctor couldn't treat her properly in her home town ....they went to islamabad as a last resort ....n were told its too late now ....she could be a normal healthy child if was diagnosed earlier .....she is almost 2 years old now ...can't even sit on her own!!!
then there is someone i know .....her daughter isn't mentally stable ....n its really getting a tough tough job to control her ,....as she is in her teens now ....her body is mature n normal but her mind is too young to cope with any bodily changes ....
may they all get well soon ......n may Allah save us all from such tough situations ...amen!
as for treating them ......as far as i am aware they are being well treated .....their parents r trying their utmost to help them live their life .......the patients themselves r suffering , no doubt ....but my heart really cries for the parents ....the patience , the suffering , everything is on its peak !
Re: Mental Illness
