Awww .. poor gal ! Missed all the once-in-a-life-time fun. I really don't get it, it is her wedding .. shouldn't she enjoy it even a lil bit? I mean .. whole time most of the brides at their mehndis are sitting with a ghoongat like one shown above .. their shoulders drooping to the floor and head bowed down. I mean, how bad is that !

hmm I dunno... I don't get the whole ghoongat shoongat deal...

itz my brother's mehndi 2night. leaving in a few min but i don't want to go. i don't like mehndi shendi stuff. i'll probably kidnap my wife to skip mehndi :~)

I don't get it either Chandbeti.

I guess there is no proper way of doing things. Some will prefer to have a ghoongat covering them while others will simply prefer a dupatta on their head. I know I will only have my hair covered with a dupatta if I ever have a mehndi ... but being in a ghoongat ... that's just too much for me. :)

haha, think of all the girls you will see there! That should make you happy. Anyway, mendhis are a lot of fun...singing, dancing ... everyone enjoying themselves. Since it's your bro's mendhi, will you be dancing too?

Alright with the whole ghoonghat deal,

Tradition has it that in the olden golden days, ghoonghat was done for the purposes of purdah, as I understand it  Now with combined (groom&bride) mehndiyaN, the bride has a ghoonghat so that the groom doesn’t get to see her before the actual wedding day. The ghoonghat is used to preserve her pre-wedding “glow” that she’s supposed to get, so that on the actual day the groom is bedazzled by her beauty. :halo: So the ghoonghat in a way keeps the groom anticipating and looking forward to the big day and expecting something grand.

It’s kinda like in western weddings where the groom isn’t supposed to see the bride in her bridal dress before the actual ceremony.

The ghoonghat was also done on the wedding day in the old days, where the groom lifts the veil after the bride is in their bedroom. I think in some indian and bengali weddings (maybe even pakistani) the bride even now has the ghoonghat during the wedding ceremony, but the bride and groom are allowed to see each other by placing a mirror between them. The bride looks down into it, and the groom is then able to see her and is supposed to say something good about what he saw.

I am assuming the groom has seen the bride, right?

I like mehndi parties. People dancing and singing. Sort of like a pre-party for the big event.

:~) yeah i did dance i was horrible :~) but then none of us are professional dancers so it was not a big deal.

What..guys have mehndis too?

The only ones I have been to are the day before the wedding when the guys go get their drink on and the girls do their own mehndi bit and everyone gets together later and dances their ass off.

I've never been to a girl's only mendhi here. It's always been both men and women, lots of dancing. The latest trend is for there to be one conjoined mendhi of both the bride and groom and they sit on stage next to each other. :) I don't know how things are done in Pakistan but that's how the majority of mendhis that I have been to here in T.O. have been.

In fact, the last mendhi I went to, the bride's brother and his wife choreographed dances ... it was his baby sis's wedding. Very sweet!
