Abu Moosa al-Ash’ari (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (SAW) (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Silk and gold have been permitted for the females of my ummah, and have been forbidden for the males.” (Reported by Imaam Ahmad, 4/393; see also Saheeh al-Jaami’, 207).
The market nowadays is filled with any number of items designed for men, such as watches, spectacles, buttons, pens, chains and so-called “medallions,” made of gold of various standards, or completely gold-plated. One of the common sins occurs in competitions where among the prizes are men’s gold watches.
Ibn 'Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allaah (SAW)(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) saw a man wearing a gold ring; he took it and threw it aside, saying, “Would any of you take a burning ember from Hell and hold it in his hand?” After the Prophet (SAW)(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) had gone away, someone suggested to the man: “Why don’t you take your ring and benefit from it (sell it)?” He said, “No, by Allaah, I will never take it back when the Messenger of Allaah (SAW)(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) has thrown it aside.” (Reported by Muslim, 3/1655).
my question on this issue is. is gold not allowed or silk not allowed due to what it is in itself or what it represents...luxury, femininity ..whatever.
if so how far can the concept be taken, should platinum and microfibre also be not allowed, or is that a wrong interpretation.
My Dear who said that muslims are not supposed to enjoy any kind of luxury in this life ?
We usually see in our every day life that non-muslims also enjoy lot of blessings of Allah and live a lavish life.
But The good news is that, these blessings of Allah are first for the believers!!! mainly they are for the believers because Allah has said that muslims are the best of all nations. the only condition is that whatever we enjoy, it should be legally!!. the money we earn should be earned in a legal way and fulfil our desires with our wives legally and so on.
There were companions of Prophet pbuh who were very very very rich. Just an example, the Third Khalifa Othman (may Allah be pleased with him) was so rich that it took so many ( i dont know the exact figure) accountants to do the accounts of his wealth.
Prophet pbuh ordered men not to wear gold, so we should have an attitude like the Companions who used to reply " Hear and Obey ".
Please dont make things hard on yourself by assuming that if gold is HAram on men then other things like platinum should also be haram.
no he said that hez got a mp3 dat has gold plated contacts
muh bad i assumed that he listens to music on mp3 and said that listening to musical instruments is haram. who knows he might have been listening to Holy Quran on it
So now that we have agreed that it is the item itself and not what it represents, I have another question.
islam being a very logical religion muct have a reason to not allow men to use gold or wear silk. Now..does that include gold for health reasons, fillings for example, or what happens when people use silk blend fabrics for couches, comforters, bedsheets.
So, is it wearing them on your body, or utilization of them in other ways that is not allowed as well.
