PCG, Bohras speak Gujarati, with a accent. Kucchi is a dialect of Gujarati not a different language.

I was just searching online and somehow I landed on this forum. I had to read on because there was a talk going on about memons and I wanted to make sure I had my facts right.

I’m memon too and I knew most of this stuff but I might not have been able to lay it all out like you did.

In Pakistan, memons are concentrated in Karachi and having lived all my life in the Middle East and most recently the US it seems like not a whole lot of people outside Karachi, in Pakistan, even know about memons, bhoras and khojas, let alone know the differences.

And she is accurate about memons not being a sect, memons are like punjabis, sindhis, balochis, pathans, kashmiris, etc. just like there are punjabis who are sunni muslims, shias, christians hindus and sikhs; there are memons who are muslims, hindus and possibly other faiths.

But primarily, memons are Sunni Muslims!!!

Agent Smith is wrong. Khojas typically speak Kutchi, which is NOT GUJRATI. Bhoras have their own langauge also - also it is NOT GUJRATI. Memons speak memoni. Each of the three languages are mixes of Sindhi and Gujrati and some other languages. I think there is even Punjabi mixed in there as well, due to the different migration patters of the groups over centuries. However, the ancestors of all 3 groups are the same.

You are getting confused with the whole Brahmin bit. Memon ancestors from Sindh were Brahmins AT THAT TIME. Obviously after converting to Islam and centuries of time gone by, we dont think of ourselves as Brahmins anymore. In fact, most Memons have no idea that their ancestors were Brahmins, nor would they probably care to know. Its just part of our history.

So, since memons are SUNNIS, they will marry Sunni muslim. Whether that Sunni Muslim is culturally a Pathan, or a Punjabi, or a Kashmiri, or an Irani, or a Chinese, etc - doesn’t matter.

Babakhan i dont think kanjoos would be the right term. Kanjoos are those who don't spend on anything that doesn't benefit them and sometimes they dont even spend on stuff that benefits them - they just like hoarding money.

Raja sahib: Do you or the girl belong to a conservative family? I would say meet the girl in person or talk to her on the phone/online etc and ask her all thsi in person. Maybe she will be able to explain things in a way you find easier to understand?
