just want to apologize in advance this thread is not meant to be insulting towards memons or offensive at all… i’m just an ignorant person trying to gether some info…
i have had some memon friends while growing up…like just two actually…n ethnicity was never an issue so i dont remember much abt them from the angle of them being memon…
i’m not really familiar with memon culture and the memon community…my friends were just like any of us…but i remember it used to be this thing for them k they are memon…but like..how differrent is memon culture from like punjabi culture? i know the language is differrent, and the ladies wear a different type of dress…does that still happen? my memon friends used to wear shalwaar kameez but their moms used to wear different clothes…and my friends could speak urdu but at home they spoke a different language…and there used to be this thing that memons are very stingy abt money , but i reckon thats just a stereotype..
and there are special types of food…and most men r into businesses…and the community is very much into mixing only with memons? and most memon ppl marry within the memon community…
do u guys know of memon ppl who didn’t marry into memons…and how did the community take it? is it normal for ppl in our generation who r memons to socialise with non memons at a family level?
r memons mostly shias or sunnis? being a memon is nothing religious right? like do memons have jamat khanas like bohris and ismailis or special colonies? r all memons in karachi in pakistan?
is it considered ok for girls to work n go out and stuff or is the memon community very conservative?
if they’re any memons on the board, would really appreciate your replies..or even other ppl who know…thanks a lot and apologies once again for my ignorance hope none of the questions r offensive..its just stuff i have heard that i said in this thread..
Haha.. cant wait for smooth and faizy to reply to this one :D I personally have come across tons and tons of memons in my life. Here are some of my observations:
Memons are extremely nice people and most of the memons that i have come across are very soft spoken and easy to deal with. They are not stingy with money but the traditional memons do not believe in fazool kharchi and extravagance. They believe in simplicity of living hence they'd have million $ businesses but they will still live a normal middle class life.
It is true they avoid marrying out of their families but thats true for many other groups of people. That trend is now changing fast as more of them grow accustomed to city life. My bhabhi is memon so there they do marry outside.
Most memons are sunni, but like every other group theres shia, ismaili bohri etc memons too. They go to the regular place of worship according to their religious sect i.e. sunni masjid, shia masjid, jamaat khana etc.
The two major kinds of memons are 'kachi' and 'kaaThiwaRi'. Their language is very similar to sindhi and gujrati. If you speak either of those two languages you can understand memoni too.
The one gift that memons have is their ability to do fair business and to prosper with that too. They are also very community minded and therefore you find many of them living together. They like living in metropolis areas and thus you would find a memon in literally every corner of Karachi.
I was surrounded with Memons in my PECHS neighbourhood in Karachi. They are very simple, generous ppl, very close-knitted families and very sharp in general.
According to comedian Umer Sharif, memons are so business minded that if their wives show up at their shops, the memon shopkeeper would say, " haan Baaji bolo , kia chaahyey?"

Not all of them migrated from India. There are many Sindhi memons as well.
By the way, I read somewhere that Memons actually came from Jordan. They originally called themselves 'Momin' which later turned into 'Memon'.
Don't know how much truth is in this story.
