Karachi is no doubt a melting pot…full of various cultures and denominations…what i fail to understand is why that breeds so much trouble.
In London…contrary to belief isnt full of seperatist Muslims…rather most of those who do not assimilate within society are those who live in enclosed Pakistani communities which they do up North. In the same way White people are segregated up North. So neither communities understands the mechanics of each others culture and relies on negative stereotypes and fear in order to interact with each other which tends to lead to violence or tension…it happens in London as well but again in communities where there is one predominant community…for instance a friend of mine lost his jaw shortly after the bombing after his white neighbours decided they wanted to get to know him…Central London tends to be metropolitan where people interact with different cultures regularly and are able to form their own opinions of them…one friend of mine works in London with a full beard and no-one treats him differently since the bombings.
Why then in Karachi (which im visiting in the summer) always have such tension or is that exaggerated cos from what i know everyone hates everyone…with communities surrounding each other i would assume their relations to be better or do they all segregate themselves from each other…do pathans only hang with pathan, mohajir with mohajir etc…like im sure everyone is schooled together so surely this helps to assimilate cultures…then again im ignorant of the area and just want to learn more about it…so any help into understanding what the deal is would be much appreciated.
Re: Melting Pot in Karachi
Karachi has gone to the dogs and its convenient to blame some other community (read as ethnicity) other than your own.
Karachi should make it a part of their curriculum in schools to get rid of these differences.
But then Karachi should be doing a lot of things that it doesn't do, because its in the hands of the world's biggest con-artists.

Re: Melting Pot in Karachi
Maddie have you tried living there? Sure, its getting better - I wont doubt there has been improvement.
But the city needs to do more. Its easy when you have a lot of money - life is definitely great there.
But its very annoying to know that whenever there is a rainstorm, the wires fall and they're still giving off sparks, and then little kids in low-lying areas end up going outside to play and then they get electrocuted. Its also annoying to know that so many runaway kids are lying out on the streets sleeping at night while police are out on the prowl looking for some "action" from a child.
The city is very sick, and it could certainly do a lot better in leveling some law.
