Mehran Gate: Yunis Habib points finger to Aslam Beg, Ishaq Khan

Ex-chief of the Mehran Bank Yunis Habib has sought unconditional pardon from the Supreme Court.

According to the details the ex-chief of the Mehran Bank Yunis Habib has admitted paying the sum of Rs 350 to 400 million on the orders of the then president Ghulam Ishaq Khan and ex-COAS Mirza Aslam Beg.

He prayed that he had no option other than complying with the said order. The money was allegedly paid to get the Islami Jamhoori Etihad elected in the general elections against Pakistan People’s Party. He also disclosed Roedad Khan forced him to file a case against Asif Ali Zardari.

He also mentioned the name of Col Akbar who gave him the account numbers for transferring the money. General Aslam Beg arranged Younus Habib’s meeting with president, he allged.

He also disclosed Aslam Beg demanded that amount for the sake of national interest.

The court adjourned the hearing till March 9.

Another important case as if convicted it will seal the fate of nawaz sharif and javed hashmi.

Some people think that it is their right to conspire against PPP and erect all kinds of barriers so that people of Pakistan should derive who they want to vote and bring them in to power. It is a shame that people like IK, NS, JI or even Javed Hashmi played their dirty and ugly role of playing B-team for the ISI and military in that.

Asad Durrani (former ISI chief) has confessed infront of the court that he disributed money to different politicians before the 1990 elections.

Does anyone know the list of the politicians which might have been the part of this conspiracy.

The case seems to be sound as it seems Mehran Bank chief, and the ISI chief during the period seem to have confessed to have been a part of the conspiracy.

Mehran bank scandal also known as “Mehrangate” was a major political scandal in Pakistan between 1990-1994 in which senior politicians and political parties were found to have been bribed by military and intelligence officers to prevent the re-election and destabilize the government of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

Initiated by Chief of Army Staff Mirza Aslam Beg with the alleged support of President Ghulam Ishaq Khan payments of up to 140 million Rupees were done by the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Chief Asad Durrani and Javed Nasir via the owner of Mehran Bank Yunus Habib. Intelligence funds were deposited in Mehran bank in 1992 propping up what was an insolvent bank as a favour for its owners help in loaning money to the Inter-Services Intelligence in 1990 that was used in the creation of the right wing alliance Islami Jamhoori-Ittehad and bankrolling the campaigns of many opponents of the PPP.
The scandal subsequently broke after the new ISI Chief Lt. Gen Javed Ashraf Qazi decided to transfer the intelligence fund back to state owned banks as per official rules. Mehran Bank was unable to return the money due to its poor financial state and collapsed. It was later discovered that large sums had been siphoned of to 39 fictitious parties.
In 1995, Mehran Bank was amalgamated with the National Bank of Pakistan and in 1996 the NBP had to make full provision for Mehran’s liabilities which resulted in a net loss that year to the bank of Rs 1.260 billion. .

A Supreme Court Petition was lodged by Air Marshal Asghar Khan with the bank transfer details. I wonder as to if Chief Justice of Pakistan could actually take up the case or not?

On April 20, 1994, giving details about the payments made by Mr Habib to generals, politicians and political parties, the then Interior Minister, Naseerullah Babar, told the National Assembly that the main beneficiary of his largesse was former army chief General Mirza Aslam Beg who received Rs140 million.

**Key politicians named as recipients of ISI funds included Jam Sadiq Ali (Rs70 million from Habib Bank and Rs150 million from Mehran Bank), Journalist Altaf Hussein Qureshi (Rs.20 million); Yousuf Memon for Ijaz-ul Haq and Javed Hashmi (Rs.50 million); Nawaz Sharif (Rs6 million); former Sindh chief minister Muzaffar Hussain Shah through his secretary (Rs13 million), MQM Haqiqi (Rs5 million), former Sports Minister Ajmal Khan (Rs1.4 million), Jam Mashooq Ali (Rs3.5 million), Liaqat Jatoi (Rs1 million), Dost Mohammad Faizi (Rs1 million), and Jam Haider (Rs 2 million).

**Yunus Habib was arrested on April 7, 1994 for misappropriation in the sale proceeds of the Dollar Bearer Certificates. This is why PPP come back with full force. When you kill its leaders, pesecute its workers, use illegal money to curb this party, so the pary become the party of martyrs and gain the sympathy of people. And why not, who the hell are these generals, do they think Pakistan “in ke baap ki jaagir hay jo marzi main aaian woh karain”. CJ should issue order of arrest of these generals who are directly involved in political corruption.

**ISLAMABAD: After remaining silent for two decades, former chief of Mehran Bank Younis Habib came out with startling revelations when he told the Supreme Court that the country’s top military and political leadership forced him to arrange funds for the anti-PPP politicians before the elections in 1990, DawnNews reported.

A three-member Supreme Court bench, led by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, on Thursday resumed hearing of a petition filed by Air Marshal (retd) Asghar Khan pertaining to illegal distribution of funds by the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI).

Habib submitted a written statement before the bench, saying that former president Ghulam Ishaq Khan, former army chief General Aslam Beg, the then ISI head Lt Gen (retd) Asad Durrani and Roedad Khan had used him for the purpose.

He said that Ishaq Khan and Beg had asked him to arrange some 400 million rupees to be used for what they called ‘national interest’.

He went on to say that his bank had arranged the said money by opening fake accounts.

Around 140 million rupees were given to the Inter Services Intelligence, the statement further said.

Habib said that the politicians were hesitant in taking money from the ISI therefore he was used for the purpose.

He apologised for being a part of the scandal in his statement and said he was under tremendous pressure and was left with no choice other than to follow the orders.

The chief justice ordered for copies of the statement to be provided to Khan, Beg and Lt-Gen (retd) Asad Durrani, directing them to submit their reply by tomorrow.

Durrani had submitted his reply after receiving the copy of the statement same day. In his reply, he confirmed that he had distributed around 140 million rupees.**

As far as Nawaz Sharif is concerned I have been hearing quite contradictory reports, of 20 million for Ittefaq Foundries and 6 million others.

This case also involves ISI, so lets see if it proceeds or is stopped at some stage due to compromise in national interests.

**He was an active member of MQM in 1990 (ies) and uncle (mamu) of prominent leader Dr. Farooq Sattar. He contested provincial election in Karachi as an MQM candidate (Farooq Sattar was contesting for MNA from the same area). He was also the main character of MQM / PPP negotiations.
