So approximately how many times in a month do you get guests?
Do you make a number of dishes for them?
what if they were unexpected guests?
What would you make jaldi jaldi mai?
Re: Mehman
2-3 times in a month we get guests in our house
when they come with a prior notice then we make 5-6 items for them plus drinks
for unexpected guests we keep frozen samosas and rolls and quickly fry them and serve them with chatni.
in jaldi jaldi main I can only make tea & fry some of the above mentioned.
2 times on average or sometimes all weekends are busy.
Depending on why they are visiting it can be anywhere from just one simple dish to 4 dishes max. that's excluding the meetha. Usual is one rice dish one roti dish & some sort of kababs to go with them.
Unexpected guests can go back. We don't drop at anyone's place unannounced & expect the same thing from others.
Jaldi Jaldi may Chana Pulao, Chicken Pulao, Karahi Chicken, Chinese Chicken Chow Mein. Either one of these dishes with kababs of any sort. I have even made Biryani many times on short notices.
Re: Mehman
4 times almost evry weekend ![]()
ya my mom she cook like 4 -5 dishes ![]()
Re: Mehman
Almost every alternate day … nai to atleast 3-4 times a week :hinna: … Most come informed .. but if they just turn up without calling on us first, then its chai biskut for them
… I have something in meetha all the time in my fridge , since hubby loves dessert and I make something or the other almost every day …
So its that plus biskuts , crisps etc along with tea ![]()
Re: Mehman
No guests so no cooking :(
But if I were living close to my in laws (since then it would be more likely for guests dropping in), for davats I'd do 4-5 dishes in advance plus drinks/salad/raita etc.....jaldi jaldi mein, keep the frozen samosas etc on hand....
a few times i've been to each inlaws house (with 15 minute notice) and they would serve us chips/nuts/samosas/drinks etc...which was pretty good
Re: Mehman
I have often wondered , if its a good idea to serve guests french fries with tea , if they drop by suddenly ?
somehow , I always stop myself and dont feel comfy doing it .. but then I thought i might find out from you guys ... what do ya say?
Re: Mehman
^ Nope we never serve guests french fries, unless there's a set item on the menu that they will go with. They never get served alone.
We usually get guests for a full meal around 2 times a month. We make a couple of dishes which includes 2 starters, a variety of mains and of course dessert. Drinks and etc too.
Unexpected guests (depending on the reason for their visit) get samosas and sheesh kebabs (from the freezer) and we usually make up some fresh pakoreh too if we have enough time. We serve salad and raita with it and of course drinks/tea/coffee/biscuits/cake.
Re: Mehman
We get guest rarely, but once in a while when my chachis come to visit our fridge is usually stocked with frozen appetizers that can be prepped in minutes. They don't come from afar thats why we don't really serve them a meal.
Frozen appetizers are somosas, eggrolls, shami kebobs, french fries, sandwiches, frozen cake, chocolate chip cookies etc..

We get them frequently and...I love entertaining. I used to do it as much as I possibly could manage.
For expected guests, I did aout 4 - 5 dishes.
Unexpected guests were usually served a variety of snacks.
I call it emergency food and my stash is:
frozen samosas
frozen eggrolls
frozen aloo tikkis
frozen turnovers
I always keep fillo dough to make quick puffs with bhuna huwa qeema/chicken
I keep chicken salad in the refrigerator at all times because my family loves it and it seems to be a hit with the guests
cookies
biscuits
cake
:)

Maybe if they were home made with some fun garnishments (seasoning, sour cream, salsa, etc) and served with iced tea...
Not sure if its something that would go with hot tea...

Re: Mehman
I think well cut fruits are a great emergency food … infact they are more refreshing and healthy then the frozen products … Sometimes they have saved the day for me ![]()
What i do is : on a large platter I put five bowls and cubed banana , cubed mango, cubed other fruits in each bowl .. and some nuts in the middle of the platter … works beautifully…

This is what we’ve been doing for unexpected guests since the weather improved as nobody wants tea or a hot snack. Mangoes are widely available, as are melons, watermelons, strawberries, pineapples etc so when we get a guest drop by we chop a load of fruit up and offer it with ice cold drinks, biscuits and cakes.
