**Narrated Uthman bin Affan: The Prophet said, “The most superior among you (Muslims) are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it.”
**
If the purpose of such kind of mehfil (gathering) is to learn Quran and its teaching then i don’t think its a biddah although its a very good habbit. Many Islamic institutes have mehfils (gathering) where they teach Quran. But if such kind of mehfil (gathering) where pplz get-to-gether and read Qur’an without paying attention, carelessly and without understaing the message of Almighty Allah SWT! than i think such kind of mehfil should be stopped.
**In Book ‘Prophetic Commentary on the Quran (Tafseer of the Prophet )’ of Sahih Bukhari Hadith No. 459 **
**Narrated Aisha: The Prophet said, “Such a person as recites the Quran and masters it by heart, will be with the noble righteous scribes (in Heaven). And such a person exerts himself to learn the Quran by heart, and recites it with great difficulty, will have a double reward.” **
When you hold such kind of gathering then ofcourse the visitors (guest) should be entertained (served by tea or anythings else).
In Book ‘To make the Heart Tender (Ar-Riqaq)’ of Sahih Bukhari Haith No. 482
**Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should talk what is good or keep quiet, and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should not hurt (or insult) his neighbor; and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, should entertain his guest generously.” **
I have failed to understand why a mehfil where people will be reciting Quran can be bidah. I think you should go with as there are lot of barkat of reciting Quran majeed.
What you can do is have siparas for people who's like to read siparas, have surat-e-yaseen books for people who'd like to read something small. Also have tasbeehs for people to do dururd shareef kee tasbeh.

Better you recite by yourself by reading Bismillah complete and/or Surah Al Fatiha including some small surah i.e. Surah Al Kauwthar or let some1 else do it in the gathering.
Waise recitation in cd also not bad idea but the listener must listen it carefully not just waiting when it will gonna end and then start their talks. :)
as-salam alaikum sister, as far i know group recitation of the quran is not bidah. im not aware of any group which deems it so either, so i dont know why someone prevented you from reciting. there is however disgreement on the issue of khatams
**reading or reciting Qur'aan in gatherings is NOT bid'a and it is encouraged in Islam. There is NO harm in starting any gathering with the remembrance [zikr] of Allah and what could be better zikr than reading or reciting Qur'aan-e-Kareem.
It has been a tradition in Islam to initiate a gathering with 'tilaawat-e-Qur'aan Majeed'. i studied at AligaRh Muslim University and there all the functions including the Convocations wud start with tilaawat-e-Qur'aan.**
The reading/recitation of Quran can not be a biddah........but the biddah part (from what i have heard) is...........when people recite quran x number of times..or recite yaseen x number of times.......and then 'bakhsh' it to someone......like they say "hum ne 5 quran bakhshay hain to so and so"....... that part is what people say is biddah.........because the reward of recitation will only go to the reciters and it can not be transferred to the person to whom it is supposedly 'transferred'.......

I've heard otherwise directly from a scholar. You can transfer reward to others.
If reciting Quran for number of times and attending Majalis where Quran has been recited is called a Biddah then what you think of the Majalis-e-Muharram where ppl gathered and hear the Waka-e-Karbala ? Why do they read Salawat on Aal'e Muhammad number of times during such majalis?
Look, we have got so many firqahs in our todays' world and everyone thinks that the one he/she is following is the correct and all the others are doing wrong. However, Almighty Allah will judge it on the judgement day who is wrong and who is correct, so if you believe your heart and your mind accept what you are doing in your current Firqah, simple follow it and STOP saying Bidah Bidah Bidah !!!
I can provide so many references from Holy Quran and Ahadees where reciting Holy Quran / aisaal-e-sawaab by way of reading Quran number of times is not a Bidah ! but again, ppl who never accept such forms will never accept it !!!
