uff, itne mushkil urdu lafz, and i thought ghalib was daunting enough to understand! my father likes mehdi hasan very much. from what i heard (and it wasn't a lot), two of the ghazals i liked best...
ranjish hi sahi, dil hi dukhane ke liye aa...
and
zindagi mein to sabhi pyaar kiya karte hain; main to mar ke bi meri jaan tujhe chahun-ga
do you know who is the shayar of these two ghazals?
there were few others too, but i cannot recall right now. have to get that cd for myself. ghulam ali, reshma, nusrat fateh ali khan are some of the other pakistani artists i enjoy listening to.

Well, I am a proud owner of all Mahdi Hassan concert volumes... every one of them is a great collection... Few of my favorite ghazals are:
1- jab bhi aati hai teri yaad kabhi shaam ke baad
2- mohabat karney waley kam na hongay
3- Gulon mein rang bharay (the version that includes Mahinder Singh Bedi's 'sher' in it)
4- Yaro kisi qatal se kabhi pyar na mango
5- jab us zulaf ke baat chali
6- baat karni mujhey mushkil kabhi aise to na thi
7- Rafta rafta wo meri (the ghazal version)
8- And of course, zindigi mein to sabhi pyar
kiya kartey hein
9- ayay kuch abar, kuch sharaab ayay
us ke baad ayay jo azaab ayay
And all of the rest ghazals written by Faiz and Qateel Shafai

Asif: That's concert volume #2... great album... There another of Mehdi Hassan's album in market, titled 'Kehna Usay', the peotry is by Farhat Shahzad and music by Niaz Ahmad.. The music/ghazals in this album are are sort of light... not the conventional Tabla and Harmonium that usually his ghazals are in. Man, you got to listen to that tape... you would love it.
Couple of its great ghazals are:
1- tanha tanha mut socha kar
2- konplein phir phoot aiNee kehna usay
3- faisla us ko bhool janay ka
ik naya khawab hay diwaney ka
4- dekhna unka kanakheoN sey idhar dekha kiay

Wiz: I have only one CD of Mahdi Hassan.. I will try recording some ghazals from it and then will let you know.. I would need some equipment for that... any suggestions? Which software should I use? I would need to use the Line In socket of the sound card, right?

Its very simple just download Real Encoder (its free) from the net and you are all set for recording...just put your CD in your PC CD drive and run the Real Encoder, set some parameters, that's all.
