Meeting Desi People

How do you go about meeting other desi people? Singles? Families? Play dates for your little kids?

Omg, just this weekend we had my dad's cousin or something come over, and I was freakin out. I don't know any desi people so I have no clue how to act. I didn't even want to talk to the other uncle. My mom was like just go ask what kind of chai he wants! I was like "Noooooo mommy noooooo!!!!!!" O geez, one was the son of the woman who made my daddoo turn on my mom and dad and made up stories, and the other dude was from england who knew my puhpo. Oh god......

Re: Meeting Desi People

^ you don't know any desi people? How about getting to know your immediate family for a start?

ahhh to be thirteen again

So you didn't tell us what type of chai he liked. I'm betting doodh pathi.

My immidediate family is in Pakistan, and they know that I'm....unconventional. It's the other people with those wagging tongues I'm worried about.

I'm 20!

And it was just a little strong type of chai.....

Re: Meeting Desi People

Social circle Period.

Re: Meeting Desi People

why would you ghettoise ur social circle to pakistanis?

Re: Meeting Desi People

Masjids, community events, festivals, melas, charity events, getting involved in your local mosque, etc.

There are lots of ways to run into desi people.

Re: Meeting Desi People

Aside from masjids. Only certain characters are found there outside of jummah.

Re: Meeting Desi People

Shows (as in desi movie shows, concerts)
Masjid (kids classes)
Desi grocery stores
At other desis homes
14th August, 23rd March community mela
On the beach (if you see a family wearing winter clothes in the summer time, or if you smell chicken tikkas)
At the airport (if you see a person with 4 big bursting suitcases with one suicase probably opened and a plastic grocery bag to dump excess luggage, and a friend standing on the side to take that plastic bag home)

Re: Meeting Desi People

At Uni...

Re: Meeting Desi People

So you randomly strike up conversations with strangers at grocery stores, melas, the beach and the airport?

Or do you do what everyone else does, which is stare and maybe whisper to your family "oh dekho shalwaar kameez wali jaa rahi hai"

Re: Meeting Desi People

^^ :omg:

I have met a few friends at the grocery store but it is usually if my kid and her kid started chatting and one of us moms started talking to each other about our kids…then we find out we live close to each other, exchange numbers and meet.

Most of the people we met here were at the masjid as our kids go for Qur’an lessons…we see each other 3 times a week, element of familiarity…get together, meet more families through each other.

Re: Meeting Desi People

LOL ... ishld try that too eh ... show up for random kid's classes ... see how well that works

lol...

I strike up conversations with desis and munchkins kinder.. and its nice.

masjids or muslim events arent a bad way to meet guys though.. u may fnid someone really decent there... and maybe someone in the same boat as you. Venturing out to find a partner?

Re: Meeting Desi People

Re: Meeting Desi People

I can’t strike up random convos:bummer:

Re: Meeting Desi People

Mosque is the best place. Normally you see same people again and again and figure out if you want to step ahead. Grocery store etc have more hit/miss ratio
