Medicine in Pakistan????

Is it possible to do study a medicine degree in Pakistan and then use it in the UK. If so what are the top unis in Pakistan to study at, especially in Pindi-Islamabad.

Cheers

Re: Medicine in Pakistan????

Thanks for the overwhelming response.

Re: Medicine in Pakistan????

Are you asking for yourself? I thought you were a math Phd?

Okay, from what I've seen happen to my relatives and others, usually a degree from Pakistan isn't honored in the US (or UK too probably). You know all those cab-drivers, deli-owners, gas station workers/owners you see? The majority of them have degrees in physics or law or medicine etc. So I've come to the conclusion that Pakistani education is pretty much worthless. I'd be careful. And go ask real people, ask relatives/freinds in Pindi-Islamabad, find the contact information from the schools and call em up, ask around at theuniversities in the Uk

Hope this helped

Re: Medicine in Pakistan???

On the contrary Sarah, an M.B.B.S. from a recognized University in Pakistan is most definitely honored almost all around the world. Each region however has its own licensing procedures and that’s where the hurdle is. In the U.S. for example, people need to successfully complete U.S.M.L.E. steps 1,2 and 3 in order to be able to start their residency.

I’m pretty sure that in U.K. it will be something almost similar, albeit it may even be easier cuz of the Commonwealth link between the two countries.

I can only give more info on the U.S. and Canadian system. I have three or four relatives who’ve successfully started practicing after getting their M.B.B.S. in Pakistan.

Fita, the key is not to get sucked into one of those galli mohalle ke colleges. Do your research, but the major medical colleges in Pakistan include:
Agha Khan, King Edward, Allama Iqbal, Army Medical College, Dow, and Ayub Medical College. These are the ones I know of the top of my head.

Re: Medicine in Pakistan????

Well I had to respond to the poor guy, his thread was up here for seven days and no one replied :( I'll admit I'm not an expert on medicine and the MBBS but I was just relating what I knew about Pakistani education based on the experiences of others..

Re: Medicine in Pakistan????

^ no sweat...
for some reason, the thread didn't catch my attention.

Re: Medicine in Pakistan????

Shifa medical college is best in pindi-islamabad egion

Re: Medicine in Pakistan????

^ no way. RMC (Rawalpindi Medical College) is the best in pindi. Elsewhere, in addition to the ones Umar Talib posted, theres Baqai (comparable to ayyub), Sindh Medical College (also in karachi, second best after Dow in the area). Oh and of the colleges listed, RMC and AMC and Shifa are in the Isb/Pindi region.. and RMC is the only govt college. AMC is the army medical college, I wouldnt recommend it for you since u plan to practice in the UK, and I believe AMC trains you to be an army doctor, and not only your education accordingly oriented, but you are actually placed as an army major afterwards.

overall, government medical colleges in pakistan are quite good because they have good student quality (getting into a govt college is very competetive), have access to government hospitals and have fairly good teachers. oh and the fees is practically nothing. i think its 10,000 rupees an year or something. The only decent private medical colleges I know of in Pakistan are AKU and Baqai. their fees by the way is easily in the 200,000 rupees per annum range.

regarding practicing in UK, the MBBS is very much honoured, and a whole bunch of pakistani doctors go to UK every year to do FRCS (the UK specialization) and then practice there. I'd wager the bulk of the pakistani doctors abroad do their undergrad in pakistan. The equivalency test for uk is PLAB, which is less tough to clear than the US test USMLE.

Re: Medicine in Pakistan????

I agree with Umar, every country has its own benchmark when it comes to allowing person to work in the medical sector. Apart from some exceptions, usually they require you to take a test which will grant you a work permit. But when it comes to Pakistani degrees (and other degrees from third world countries) I know that in Holland they not only want you to pass a test, they actually require you to take a few courses and re-do your housejobs (total of 3 yrs) before you can start working.

Re: Medicine in Pakistan???

I posted this before..anyway here is a look at the seedier side to medical education in Pakistan

Re: Medicine in Pakistan???

^^ Zakk - like I said, you need to do your research really well before investing time, money and effort into an education. Most developing countries are victims of hoodwink schools whose primary purpose is to hoard money from those who can afford to invest the money.
These schools typically cater to those who can’t get into the “real” medical schools based on their merit.

All this does not deny that Pakistan has some really world-class Medical schools. I can say this cuz I’ve interacted with grads from all around the world during my work as an international student advisor at Kaplan for the USMLE exams.

Re: Medicine in Pakistan????

^ true Umer, again Pakistans education system is what you make of it...when you get to the PLAB/USMLE level you fast get the wheat and chaff separated..

Like anything elseyou need to research quite thoroughly before making a decision..although I know plenty of people who have gone back to study and are doing remarkably well..in all further studies..

Re: Medicine in Pakistan????

Thanks a lot people. A lot of info there for me to digest.

Sara, its for my cousin. He hasn't been able to get a place for medicine in the Uk and was thinkinging about studying for it in Pakistan. Oh and I never said I had a maths phd. Just studying for a bachelors.

Re: Medicine in Pakistan????

Its something in math, I was close.
