hi i was just wondering, does anyone here know whether its worth going to med school in pakistan.
Re: medical school in pakistan
Yeah, specially u living in the US/UK. its relatively cheap, and u could finish med skool within 5 years.
Re: medical school in pakistan
If you are serious about becoming a doctor then you should be willing to work hard and go to a medical school in usa. If your lazy and not that great in studying, then coming to Pakistan would be an excellent way to become a doctor!
Re: medical school in pakistan
why do u think that pak med schools are excellent for people who are lazy and not great in studies..????....students there too work hard, read the same stuff they do here.....and turn out to be great doctors.....i agree that u pay less out of ur pocket but it never means that docs from pak schools are not worth anything....
Re: medical school in pakistan
reckon its probli worth goin 2 med school there,.they have sum gud ones,.like Shifa Medical Uni
Re: medical school in pakistan
I think doctors in pakistan are much smarter than doctors in US
My dad became a doctor in pakistan and can diagnose much better than American doctors who need to find reference for everything :D
And I have heard that Agha Khan is really good for medical studies in Pakistan and its worth going if u can remember everything you learn from the beginning to end in Pakistan and then come here and take the USMLE exam
or better yet take the exams as u r learning in Pakistan- you will get through everything much quicker than in US and will probably know more than the people here- One of my dad's friend did that and it worked well
Re: medical school in pakistan
its alright if you go to a govt college and not a private one..big mistake
Re: medical school in pakistan
Hi, I suggest you go to Med School in your country of residence. Main reason being, that although Pakistan does produce doctors of a high calibre, there will always be a difference in the teaching culture of a desi school compared to a western school.
**I dunno about the system in America, but in the UK even if you are a british citizen by birth and decide to take your studies in a non-EU country, like Pakistan, then you are not guaranteed to find work in the UK, plus you will have to take the PLAB exams etc. to certify your competence. **
**This sounds a bit harsh, but apparently the UK goverment has favoured south-asian desi docs for such a long time, that as a result the ‘home-grown’ doctors have suffered as posts become scarce. **
Just stick to what you know best!

Re: medical school in pakistan
^^ British citizen and people on valid permits HSMP etc, are not affected by new law and UK govt didnt favoured s asian doctors, they needed doctors then.
clearing PLAB will be a piece of cake as most doctors do pass this test on first attempt.
Things are more formal in UK or US, trainee doctors dont get much exposure of patient, cant treat them, cant have variety of patient. but in Pakistan they are trained more hands on compared to counterpart in UK or US. hence they are more confident in treating people.
only thing lacks in Pakistan is formal procedure for legel reasons, ie introducing themselves to patient before anything. every one there is almost jack of all trades. etc.
NB: Pakistan medical colleges are recognised by WHO. Pak postgrad education is considered equal against any postgraduation in UK ie FRCS = FCPS from from PAk. if some one has pass part I in pak he/she is given exemption to take part II exam here in UK directly.
Re: medical school in pakistan
**Dear Shak, **
As my original post stated…I too agree with the high calibre of knowledge and professionalism displayed by Pakistani graduates…I never said they were lesser doctors or such! All I was saying was that times are changing and it will become more difficult to re-settle in the UK once you have done your Degree in a non-EU country.
With regards to clinical exposure early on, I think you will find that UK Med Schools, all seem to be incorpoarting early patient contact into their syllabuses. I think its only OXBRIDGE that perhaps leave it till 4th yr.
The UK encouraged migration of doctors from india/pak because there was a need for them, they now have enough home-grown graduates to fill vacancies, and as such it will become increasingly competitive for non-british graduates to get employment.
The person who started this thread asked for opinions, and I gave mine, sorry if it caused you offence- it wasn’t meant to.

Respectable meena01
Assalam-o-Alaikum
I hope and pray that you and your family are all fine by the grace of Allah Almighty. You have asked a very important question and my humble advice is that if you are living in Pakistan than it is worth a try but if you are abroad, then the matter is different. If you hail from Middle East then I would recommend that one should try it in Pakistan. On the other hand if you are presently in Europe or America then you should try your luck in Pakistan, only if you think yourself to be strong enough to adjust to our environment and society. I have lived all my life in Pakistan, all of my schooling and education is from this lovely country and by the grace of Allah Almighty, I am a happilly employed doctor in Pakistan. For those who have lived abroad for quite some time, the picture may not be that rosy, but let me tell you that the doctors from Pakistan are proving their worth in every country. So if you are ready to go for a job in Pakistan, then you must try it over here. If you intend staying abroad afterwards then may be you can come over here, look around, find a suitable Medical College (we dont call it school over here), complete your study and then can move back as the education over here would be cheaper than abroad. Or you may even stay put, live abroad and enjoy your study over there. For your kind perusal I am listing some Medical Colleges down below;
RECOGNISED BY PMDC (PAKISTAN MEDICAL & DENTAL COUNCIL
1. King Edward's Medical College, Lahore.
2. Dow Medical College, Karachi.

12. Chandka Medical College, Hyderabad.
13. Ayub Medical College, Abbottabad.
14. Liaquat Medical College, Larkana.

1. National Universaty of Health Sciences, Lahore.
2. Hamdard Medical University, Karachi.

4. Lahore Medical Collge, Lahore.
5. Islamic International Medical College, Islamabad.
6. Fauji Foundation Medical College, Rawalpindi.
THOSE IN ARMED FORCES
1. Army Medical College, Rawalpindi.
Little sister, for those living abroad, at times it becomes difficult to adjust in smaller cities of Pakistan, especially if you dont belong to one. So in my humble opinion, if you ever decide to study over here, then probably the medical colleges in Karachi and Lahore would suite you. I am a Pakistani and have a deep love for all its cities. By saying so, I am in no way trying to bellitle other cities, but I am trying to be realistic. Agha Medical College, Karachi plus some new colleges in private sector, both in Karachi and Lahore, may be some good options. Anyway, wherever you live, study or practice, I pray before Allah Almighty to make you an excellent Human Being, plus an equally Excellent Doctor, Ameen.
With sincere wishes for your success.
Khuda Hafiz.
Re: medical school in pakistan
You dont get my point. As a person coming from usa who did not prepare to enter med schooll properly. and therefore lazy and not that great in school, in that I mean smart people who didnt bother to study hard and get good grades. Therefore the admission in pakistan would be a LOT more easier… LOT! Technically problems though is that all self study, you wont be “taught” by the “teachers” and will have problems adjusting, but there are really simple professional exams at the end which sometimes if your lucky you can pass and not know anything. I should know, I’ve mad it to 3rd year and dont remember anything at all, so they dont test you on knowledge but mainly on test taking skills, IE making pretty outlined answers because they never read the exam answers all the way through instead skip over it.. So therefore you will technically become a doctor, with a degree, but will have to work harder after you graduate from Pakistan to pass the usmle and ReEnter the American system, so THEREFORE … IF you can get into medical school in your country, DO IT. If you really really really want to become a doctor but didnt prepare properly, then come to pakistan.
Most Pakistani doctors from govt schools become great doctors because ALL they do is study and have tons of poor patients to practice on and the real doctors are too lazy and stubborn to see them anyway, so yes you get LOTS of hands on experience, and since your not taught well, you STUDY a LOT on your own! Now is that clarified enough ? =)
Re: medical school in pakistan
thanks guys for the great information provided

First of all, what is a 'real doctor' ??
OMG, I'd really like to know which school you're studying in because as far as I know things don't happen they way you're telling them.
I agree its easier for students to enter medical colleges here on 'foreign seats' but there is a limited quota, and most of them don't clear their first professional. I remember only one out of 10 foreign students ( Foreigners n Pakistanis with foreign nationalities ) made it till 4th year.
And clarify your mind about poor patients. The teaching hospitals here have a great load of patients because there aren't enough hospitals in the periphery but it doesn't mean we treat our patients like guinea pigs.
All in all, I agree with Kazi. If you're living in Pakistan or Middle East then you should consider coming to Pakistan. If you're in west, better do it from the country you're residing in.
Re: medical school in pakistan
Real Doctors aka the ones with MBBS degrees and further training.
Id say they are treated like Guinea Pigs, put yourself in a poor persons position and go to the hospital and see the run around you get
Re: medical school in pakistan
Pakistani doctors rock.
Re: medical school in pakistan
To strictly answer your question , if its worth it or not. I would say it depends on you. Pakistani doctors rocking or not, the debate here is whether its worth it for a foreign based pakistani to come to pak for med school. I guess if your familiar with the country and language/culture, it might be worth it. Things you will have trouble dealing with
- Style of teaching, 6 days a week of classes, being treated like you are in Junior High in USA if not worse, being insulted in Viva’s occasionally. But other than that if you can work hard its definetly worth it!
Re: medical school in pakistan
LOL…2 months later…you given a good answer!![]()
Re: medical school in pakistan
haha oh well
Re: medical school in pakistan
You have no idea how hard it is to become a doctor is Pakistan. The studies are of pretty high standard. They teach you same level stuff in less time. So if you get admission there via valid grades & results, you can be a successful doctor anywhere.
