“yeh wo Media hey Jisey main ney Azadee dee hey” said his excellency our beloved President with blend of thick arrogance on his face, like he is godfather , a sponsor in an outfit of golden drape of moderate enlightenment, Saviour and creator of the very notion of freedom of speech.
Pakistani media, where it stands today, is not because of an alimony from any ruler, let alone from a dictator. They were suffocated during the days of Ayub khan, strangled by Zial-ul-Haq, and now another face of tyranny is threatening to behead the media, leave it brain less ready to show what his excellency perceive appropriate .
I salute the intrepidity of those who stood and became a beacon of resistance against the ruthless and naked onslaught of the forces so bent upon making us stooges of stupidity.
President is 100% right in his sayings. Your so called arguments about free media struggle doesn’t make sense. If geo has any problem with Code of conduct then start debating on it, instead of we don’t want to sign it. You can’t close the doors of negotiations, geo with the backing of United States of America is become a empire of media. President take the right steps to break it and make a good compete able market for other channels too.
An interview of President Musharraf on Democracy. Eye opening for most taliban lovers & so called free media struggle..
He might have given them freedom but no one has imposed such draconian measures on press and dealt with them so brutally than our beloved dictator and no one in the history of Pakistan has charged anyone with sedition for criticising the head of state except for our kursi loving dictator.
Mashallah. Good to see that you have now seen the light and accept that President Musharaf gave media in Pakistan the Freedom like it had never seen before. Soon you will be saying the same thing about the Judiciary. :D

Did anyone of them take any channel off the air?, did they bring an ordinance, how many journalists were arrested, beaten and jailed under the “terrorist” charges. I did not say that because I am loyal to any politician, I only said that because our president claimed to be one who introduced the concept of the "freedom of media"in Pakistan. He was handcuffed and could not stop the wave of media outlets under private control. You must understand freedom of speech is poison to the regime of a dictator, and I give him credit to be intelligent enough not to chew the gum of death.

peace
is this about musharraf and if so then why talk about zia and yahya? just say its about musharraf.
if this is about oppression of media, then why only talk about some rulers and not others.
now if you dont know about what took place under the other reginmes as far as how media was treated, then you need to go read up :)
now lastly, even for private media to flourish, they need to have govts agreeing to let them operate, why is it that you think that while US had channels in double digits saudi arabia had one, or Uk had 3, and then 4.
as far as teh gum of death, i agree freedom of speech is the gum of death, and that is why there was so little of it even during our civilian leaders....wait, that just means they were dictators too.
oh well if the shoe fits..
PS: some of them needed channels to take down, it appears they did not really allow much channels top operate to begin with. chew on that :)
Thank you for the quick response, your invitation to get myself educated about freedom of media in the days of rulers that you have mentioned has been taken positively, however a quick session could have been the answers to questions that I raised. I would only request you to please go back and see what constitutes the base of my argument, to give you a hint, its in bold .I am not comparing the different eras in the history of Pakistani media, neither do I intend to criticize Musharaf for his actions against the media. My only intention was to analyze the strength of underlying reality in the rhetoric, I briefly mentioned the name of Zia, and Ayub only because they were also military dictators and our media survived their offensive. The names of Benazir, and nawaz-sherif were not mentioned because they did not introduced any extra constitutional measures to suppress the voices of dissent.
I am not here to write a book about the " Journey to the adolescences" of Pakistani media. I critically analyzed an assertion made by a person about the care taking of a child, which he later killed himself.
Musharraf didn't really give them freedom, he just gave them license to run TV channels as long as these channels propagate for him and don't tell the truth. When they refused to do that for him, his excellency revoked the license.
Thats how I see it. You cant just give someone freedom and then take it back.
MashAllah, others are accepting the truth too. God Bless Pakistan & unprecedented economic growth under Musharraff.
Daleel bhai, welcome to club :D
