Well…for the duration of their study anyway.
I was thinking about the security implications (i.e if a student lost their phone…patient histories are left on the phone etc) but apparently, the data can be wiped remotely.

I guess this is a cool initiative if the Doctors in Training don’t spend more time messing around with their iPhones than actually studying/training.

you need to pay an equivalent of what could buy you the whole Apple corporation in the name of tuition fee. So what if they gave you Iphones.

Well I am sure it’s not even 1/12345th of Apple Corporation but yeh Medical Tuition is expensive. I think they should not take the iPhones back, it should be just GIVEN to the students.

the security on iphones isn’t anywhere as good as that of a blackberry, i remember reading about it and that a hacker can hack into an iphone within 15 minutes using basic tools. that was like a few months ago, I wonder if they’ve improved on that

According to the various reports I’ve read the iPhones would act like glorified pagers. Plus the ability to limit online text book access to just those devices (if they wanted to) would be an excellent option. I don’t think they would have any patient history on them.
As for security Blackberry is just as vulnerable as the iphone (from nisha’s post). The security most people mention is how there’s an encrypted connection when the BlackBerry device is connected to a Blackberry Enterprise Service (BES) in a corporation. Then the communication is hard to break. BBM’s are supposedly secure but then now all kinds of govts have their fingers in those servers (yeah, including US and Canada).
When you are doing digital communication assume that somebody will listen to it. So don’t put down anything that you don’t want to show up on a front page of a newspaper.

Maroush, I don’t know if they would use the devices to access patient protected information, if they do, it would probably be via an encrypted app. I know that these smart phones are playing a huge role in patient care these days. Every physician we know rely on their smart phones heavily. My begum uses it as her contact for when she’s on call, she uses it for various apps like her pregnancy wheel, her pharmacology reference, dose calculations, sudoku (:D), sending in scripts to pharmacies, it’s nuts. She uses and abuses her Blackberry.
