^thnx, i read through that thread, but that's more about the med school and admission if u want to do the medical study from the beginning.
I'm more interested in doing one or two months of my internship in a Pakistani hospital.
In our curriculum we have over 3 months, in which we can do our internship in the department of interest and which hospital we want. A lot of students also go abroad; either US/Canada/UK or a third world country.
since i've been to the first, I'm interested to spend a month or two in Pakistan getting acquinted to diseases which are very rare in Holland: mostly infectious diseases. And also getting to know the medical system there.
So any sites where i can find info on academic hospitals in Pak?
Neurology and Cardiology departments are particularly strong. Most my father's friends (and himself as well) went to KEMC and were very competitive in obtaining residencies and pst-grad training in the US.
Aga Khan is definitely the best med school in Pakistan in terms of faculty and placement of doctors in foreign schools and general reputation....Its a posh private college though...
there are other colleges like DOW in karachi though, * where doctors get some REAL experience though...like treating a tonne of patients in a day, without proper equipment...
that kind of experience gives u some real solid experience which u can never get in an elite place like AKU...but AKU looks good on ur resume and u can make more higher up contacts prolly...
so if you want some hard core experience dealing a tonne of patients without fancy resources that will put ur basic skills as a doctor to real tesat, you should try some other medical colleges that are not so posh as AKU, as mostly the rich ppl go to AKU and you get the fancy experience but not the common street experience which will toughen u as a doc, if u know what i mean...
in pak tho it is true in 99 percent of the cases though, that someone who gets into AKU will go to AKU...its like the number one choice and very competitive...
it'll also provide a smoother transition for u if u go to AKU from a foreign school than going to a govt college like DOW...
khayr, Nescio, you should try to get in touch with people in these colleges... just do extensive searches on the net, i'm sure u'll find some email addresses of admins/ faculty/ alumni...google zindabad...
another option is also to contact some social organisation that sends doctors to rural areas...that will also be a cool experience...*
^ if you do get some useful info from AKU, can u post it here?
i have been thinking about doing some work in pakistan, but have not had any time to do any real research about it.
any info would be greatly appreciated...thank you!
AKU is definitely the best medical college in Pakistan. It should be your first choice.
Then you can also choose Shaukat Khanum Cancer hospital in Lahore or Punjab Institute of Cardiology-Lahore.
Nescio -- Some of our seniors use the slogan "If u go thru a civil hospital, u can go thru any kind of hospital in teh world" to make us feel better. :)
It would be a totally diff. experience if u were to give it a chance.
