Re: Med school isn’t worth it anymore?
Yea but it also depends on the individuals circumstances and luck. It is alot harder for someone to get into med school in the states than in many parts of the world. Also you need a bachelor’s degree in the states before applying to med school here and once you actually become a doctor you are in your 30s…and by that time your parents start nagging you to get married leaving little room for investments and paying off the student loans of upto $120k+. Nav is from England where u can get a med degree out of high school. So it is much easier for him to build wealth than for someone in my shoes.
For that reason, I know many Paki-americans who chose to go to Dow medical college in Karachi because it is cheaper and shorter route to become a doctor. Only 5 years in Pakistan and $10k/yr. Wether they will be able to get a residency in the states is another story.
So yea you are correct. Passion is most important factor for success in any field but you have to always weigh your odds and make the best decision given your circumstances.
You make some good points. Fact of matter is unless it is your passion, something you would be happy doing even if pay was not good then go for it. If that is not the case then you will probably be miserable in this field for quite a while.
