What do you think of this article? Do student loans and Medicaid lower the expectations of doctors salary?
Nowadays, I see more and more smart brown guys , who you would assume would choose a career in medicine, major in business/finance in college.

Re: Med school isn't worth it anymore?
Without looking at the blog I can most likely agree with the topic. I've had this conversation with many friends who are either studying med or are doctors and thats precisely what they say.

What do you mean? Medicine is definitely a rewarding career because you get to help so many people but I don't think it's a good investment anymore

Just like any other profession, its up to the professional to utilise their talent and skills making use of the opportunities offered by their chosen profession. If you ask me, I'd day I could never have done so well in any other profession to go with the flexibility in my work. Of course I cant say it about all doctors, you will find millionaire doctors owning multiple private practices, pharmacies, care homes, healthcare conglomerates and then some doctors who are content with public sector jobs which by the way pay you good. So it depends upon the person. The charm and prestige is a bonus.

A classmate trained to become an ophthalmologist. He was not very good to become a posterior chamber or retinal surgeon so super-soeciaized into cataract and laser eye surgery. Now he flies between the UK, Dubai and South Africa every year and only performs cataract and vision correction procedures, and he only works three months a year, which is enough for him to buy and maintain houses in three different countries.

Okay but that's a rare case. You would need years of residency getting low pay to obtain that level of expertise. Also, it's tough to get into residencies for high paying specialties. Most med students go into family med, psychiatry...

I was specialising to become a an upper GI surgeon, but then decided to go into General Practice. It was a very calculated move despite my father's objection who is an orthopaedic surgeon. It took me much lesser time to get to general practice register. For first two years I mainly did out-of-hours, earning around 120GBP per hour. The very first year I had grossed so much I paid off my mortgage, and the second year I had enough to move to Australia and buy multiple properties with 20% deposits. So just like in any profession, you have to think out of the box, show the zeal, the method and guts to succeed. If you think that everybody who goes into finance, banking or realestate becomes a millionaire, then you are disillusioned. Same rule applied for every profession.

I agree with Nav. It is up to the person how they utilise their degree and create the path for their profession. Not all who do an MBA get high paying jobs. Not all who become architects become really well-known ones. It is up to the individual also.

Yea but it also depends on the individuals circumstances and luck. It is alot harder for someone to get into med school in the states than in many parts of the world. Also you need a bachelor's degree in the states before applying to med school here and once you actually become a doctor you are in your 30s...and by that time your parents start nagging you to get married leaving little room for investments and paying off the student loans of upto $120k+. Nav is from England where u can get a med degree out of high school. So it is much easier for him to build wealth than for someone in my shoes.
For that reason, I know many Paki-americans who chose to go to Dow medical college in Karachi because it is cheaper and shorter route to become a doctor. Only 5 years in Pakistan and $10k/yr. Wether they will be able to get a residency in the states is another story.
So yea you are correct. Passion is most important factor for success in any field but you have to always weigh your odds and make the best decision given your circumstances.

You make some good points. Fact of matter is unless it is your passion, something you would be happy doing even if pay was not good then go for it. If that is not the case then you will probably be miserable in this field for quite a while.
Re: Med school isn't worth it anymore?
Medicine will always be a great career choice even though it’s getting extremely competitive and demanding. I’ve seen so many otherwise brilliant students wasting years upon years trying to overcome one career roadblock or another and getting highly frustrated in the process. I completely agree what @Shareefbacha95 has said about cumstances and luck. Also many people do not have the luxury of staying in school then working on minimum wages for that long for various reasons.
Medicine is an extremely hierchael field where seniors vent their frustration and anger on juniors. And junions have to tolerate that in order to get that coveted recommendation letter. Then those juniors vent out their anger and frustration on those lower than them in the hierarchy and so on. After going through all the troubles and the hair, the money/prestige is usually enjoyed by everyone else around the individual rather than the individual who sacrificed so much. That can be super infuriating at times. This is where having a genuine love of the job helps.
Re: Med school isn't worth it anymore?
There's a shortage of doctors in America and there's a lot of projected growth in the field. I don't know a doctor in my family or family friends that isn't ballin lol. I think pharmacy and allied health fields are oversaturated cause a lot of former premeds go into those fields and the data proves that. I think med school does payoff if you're really patient cause it's a marathon not a race, you won't be makin the guap until your 30s so you're gonna have to sacrifice your 20s which means you have to put off marriage and kids, which kinda sucks but it's all cool lol.
Re: Med school isn't worth it anymore?
Doing well in Medicine is a long game, not make a quick buck and get your ass out of here type thing. Once you get to the specialist level, the World becomes your oyster. Having a UK degree and specialisation, i can easily transfer my job and skills to dozens of other great countries much more easily than other professions. I can chose to work in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East or most of the countries from Common Wealth. I could work in the States should i wish to after passing a licensing exam.
I can decide to work only few days a week, or only weekend. If I want I can take time out for doing things I like. I can chose to be extremely busy if i need to do (i.e before going away on a holiday so need extra cash) or just take it easy and cut down my hours. Of course you cannot do so in the beginning of your career. Like anyone else I did my fair share of nights, on-calls, long duties, etc but then it was worth it in the end.
