I am confused. They want to promote Mecca Standard Time as the center because having GMT do that is colonial legacy... what is the MST or AST going to be? muslim saudi legacy? Afterall the Saudis have culturally invaded and conquered plenty of countries that are today Islamic countries who have a lot of arab/saudi wannabes and people who "look up" to the saudis culturally.

And if you do want to do that.. why model it after the Big Ben? Isn't that colonial legacy?

let them build a clocktower like they want.
now if this was going to be the worlds largest rolex then I would be a little concerned :D

I know they have done a great job but I don’t know why but whenever I see these skyscrapers in Makkah I feel like they are gonna fell down on Khana Kaba .Astaghfaarullah that it never happen.But seriously these huge buildings against Khana Kaba give scary looks.

I miss old Makkah :( where only Khana Kabah was main attraction and you had a strong feeling of ALLAH SUBHANA O TALA

Atfirst I was shocked to hear they finished the Chah-e-zam zam and now these huge buildings.

Yes as mentioned before, the Saudis are trying to move the 'gmt' time to Makkah, which according to them is teh centre of the world, hence one of teh reasons why they created that clock tower.

I disagree with that tower, as I do not think anything should be taller than the minarets.

The clock was made by a german company and is 6 times taller than big ben, and the tallest building in the world to house a clock. It can be seen 14 kms away at night, and the day I left they put the words 'Allah' on the top.

Now that people are beginning to provide solid reasons for disagreeing with this tower, and not just moaning about the money, I'm starting to agree with them. You're right, all the historic places in Makkah should be preserved and, just out of respect for the khaana kaaba, buildings shouldn't be taller than the minarets. I agree with this.

Oh well, its done now.

btw, Respect of Kaba is not (and should not be) associated with its height. It should be in heart for what it is and not how high it is...

there are places taller than Kaaba already.
as far as destruction of historic places, it has happened already and has been going on for historically more significant places than are being torn now.

Only Saudis are dumb enough to believe that building a massive clock tower suddenly gives them the right to create their own time zone.

These Time Zones were established when the Saudis were using sun dials and roosters to wake up.

Yes so do I...

I spend 4 years living in Makkah. Back then the Masjid Al-Haram had a certain majesty to it as it was the tallest structure around.

Now with this ugly grotesque building surrounding it takes away from this very special place.

In the West, you have things like zoning laws in which you can't build certain structures near certain areas.

No building taller than the Khana Kabah minarets should have been allowed.

If the Saudis wanted to create this Clock Tower, they should have build it somewhere else.

You don't see Skyscrapers in the Vatican, or skyscrapers near any other religious site.

Imagine how would you feel if the Israelis decide to build a massive skyscraper near the Temple Mount.

I have not been to Makkah in ages and while I had heard of development it was only a few years ago I looked at the images, and on one hand I appreciate the development and growth on the other hand, i also feel something has been taken away by surrounding the masjid with tall structures.

zoning laws would have been good, I dont think they will be buikding massive buildings around vatican anytime soon.
