I have no issue with them building whatever they want. although the names of the developments and the advertising slogans made me chuckle.
The question is more of development while preserving historical sites, not because they have 'religious' value lets say, but because they have histroical value.
Did they not raze the house of the prophet just recently. That was a poor thing to do.
First of all there are ways to build around preserved places, or they could have reloacted the house...left a marker that this is the place that the prophets home stood..and maybe not built hotels or restaurants in that few blocks area but a musuem.
But none of that was done and the reasons given were rather lame. that people do biddah, educate people, discourage such practices but dont raze buildings of historic importance and erase any signs of aras of historic importance.
The old city of makkah during the prophet's time was not a huge place, and had people been sensible they would have tried to preserve as much of it as possible. not the whole city and not the whole area, but some buildings and sites of historical value.
Afterall "muqaam e Ibrahim" seems to be preserved. is it not? why was that not picked up and chucked? what religious value does it have? none, zero. it is a historic value. why could they not preserve the prophet's house? even if they had to relocate it to some area outside where a museum could be made, and the house could have been part of a museum complex.
