Does anyone eat meat from non-muslim supermarket chains?
I was quite suprised to see a lady in full hijab buying a big juicy steak a the supermarket today.
I know that one or two modern day scholars say that Muslims can eat the meat of the “people of the book” (a minority opinion) but with so many Halal butchers everywhere, surely they should be our first choice?
Also, most of this kind of meat is stunned and not slaughtered which does go against the islamic principal of making meat halal.

It's not just modern day. According to Maliki fiqh, apparently, the meat of the people of the book is permissible, and this is why very religious North African and some Arab muslims in particular have no problem with eating meat in predominantly Christian countries.
On the other hand, desi, turkish and oriental religious Muslims, who tend to follow predominantly Hanafi fiqh, generally can be seen to avoid it, since Hanafi fiqh states such meat to be haraam.
Hanbali, Hanafi and Shafi'e fiqhs maintain that the meat of the people of the book is not permissible. The Maliki fiqh differs.
My personal view is that the Hanafi opinion on the matter has much more evidence backing it than the Maliki view, so I'll never eat meat that isn't labelled as halaal.

A minor correction... the key thing which differentiates the two opinions is whether it is mandatory to take Allah (God's) name at the time of slaughter. If People of the Book take God's name at the time of slaughter, I think it will be considered permissible all around, as it is explicitly permitted in the Quran. Maliki fiqh says that if Allah's name is not taken at the time of slaughter, and it is slaughtered by the people of the book, then it makes the meat makrooh, but not haraam, and you can still eat it after taking Allah's name before eating it. The other three fiqh of ahle-sunnah differ and say that meat is not permissible at all.
Neely, did you make the effort to go up to her and tell her 'sister, i know it's non of my business, but it's my duty as a muslim to tell you ...............'

No because based on what I knew about the difference of opinion in Islam regarding "the people of the book" as described by mAd_ScIeNtIsT, I would have been out of order!
She could have turned around and quoted me evidences from scholars and then I would have been in trouble!!
I’ve seen lot’s of muslim ppl (almost all the Turkish/Maroccan ppl and even some of our Pakistani friends) eating meat/chicken at McDonalds, Burger King, KFC etc (in Western countries), but if they buy meat to cook at home they get it from halaal butchers…

lol, probably, but its good to correct :)
and its really good that you questioned it here.
Don't hold it against the guy, when he is just being honest. "Fear of Dad" in many (real life) cases, outweighs "Fear of God". Its a fact. Dad's chappal is instantanous. God's rassi, on the other hand, can be quite daraaz and there is always the possibility of total repentence.
I know two people personally who are muslims, named Mohammad (Pakistani background) and Ahmed (Kuiwaiti - syrian).
both eat Pork in any form! though Ahmed realised and stopped eating now.
I was shocked when I saw them first. and people like us struggling to find halal permisible food!
I dont eat meat from supermarket, ASDA sometime ago started selling Halal and was a good change but desi still prefer butchers for some reason. even though most of the butchers admit its not Halal they always sell ;)
I would go for kosher if I am in a country where halal not available at all.
so even in your view eating gher zabeeha meat is not okay,a tleast they are doing it right when they are cooking at home, because if we expect everyone to do everything right then there goes the whole deal of hijabis who listen to music by some viewpoints or namazis without a beard by some viewpoints
